my boyfriend and i enjoyed our stay at the Resort very much, The room which was on the very top floor and furthest from everything was clean and spacious, nice size refridgerator, the swimming pools, whirlpool, sauna, etc. were fantastic ! We didn't go to the resturants,or golf,we brought our own food, and sitting out on the balcony with a glass of wine looking at the full moon and the quiet peacefullness, was like being in heaven. We went to the "House on the Rock " the next day the people at the front desk were very friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: Top floor and at the very end of the building, away from everything,We loved it ! but other people...

We stayed over forth of july weekend. The sunday night to be exact. We had played golf before and loved the course but always thought the hotel would be a great thing to try. And it was great. The rooms are terrific. Very clean and comfortable and the bathrooms are great. We had our three kids(15,12,9) and they brought in a rollaway for our 15 year old daughter. The three kids had one room and we had much needed alone timein our own room. We ate dinner in the restaurant . I had the walleye and loved it. My son had a ny strip which was as good a piece of meat as one could order. Wife had the lamb which was great too. Daughter had salad and soup which she enjoyed. Other son has a hamburger. Everything was perfect. Great service and a wonderful charm that we all appreciated(after 3 days in the dells).my son and I golfed next day and the rest of the family played tennis volleyball and used both indoor and outdoor pools. I know there are some bad reviews here and trust me we almost canceled our reservation but we decided we would make our own fate. We were so glad we did...we will return later this summer.. we have taken our kids to australia, the greek islands santorini milos folegandros the caribbean and domestic all over and stayed in some real bad resorts but this is far from it...try it for yourself before anyone here convinces you either way.

It’s unfortunate some folks had some bad luck here, but our experience at HOTR Resort was GOOD. Our room was perfectly kept and clean. The patio had leaves and stuff on it, but it’s outside, so that’s expected in my book. Every room looks out on to the golf course and beyond that is forest. The scenery in this part of the state is awesome. Saw lots of wildlife and critters. This is a great area for a hike or bike ride. Golf course is in great shape. Our experience with hotel staff was pleasant—the check-in lady had so much to say about the resort and our stay. There isn’t much to do in town, and the dining is slim pickins’. Rookies has some good bar food. Wishing Heiny’s Dining & Spirits would have been open (closed for the holiday). Went to House on the Rock and Taliesin, and this was a good place to come back to and relax after a busy day.

Spectacular view of the golf course from our room (BR, LR and small kitchen), wonderful pool and outstanding service. The House on the Rock attraction is really outstanding. Close to Taliesen and not far from the International Crane Foundation. Great getaway.

Room Tip: Golf course view

This is not an easy property to rate -- it has many good things going for it: Extremely well maintained golf courses, comfortable public areas both indoors and outside, friendly and helpful staff, spacious and well cleaned guest room with nice balcony. The property has a definite retro feel and, as put by a previous reviewer, a cool vibe. There is a large pool, decent fitness room and a small but usable business center. Solid and helpful golf pro shop. And very well located for visiting area attractions.

I really would like to rate this as a 4, but it is guest room decor and comfort that keeps me at a 3. [I simply can't equate this to properties I have previously reviewed and rated as a 4.] As some other reviewers have noted, the rooms are very dated in furniture and decor. The rooms are suites -- we had two sleeping areas, a kitchen and eating area and, in terms of size, good overall bathroom space. In our suite, the first room was a combo kitchen, dining and sleeping area. The room, when we first walked in, was initially a bit uninviting -- no sofa, dated dining furniture and an old fashioned looking spread on the bed, with two pillows (plain pillowcases, no shams) flat on top of the bed . The second bedroom was somewhat more attractive. Note to management: It would not take much to make these rooms attractive -- updated bedding, including throw pillows, some furniture rearangement, perhaps adding a smal sofa. I found the bed somewhat uncomfortable, but other family members did not feel the same about the beds.

The bathroom space was generally good -- it was divided into three areas: a toilet space, a vanity area and bathtub/shower combo. I liked this set up -- it provided some flexibility for family use. The bathtub was jetted, but it was relatively small and shallow for a jetted tub. A bowed shower curtain would make it feel more spacious.

On the plus side, the bathroom had lots of towels and toiletries. A very big plus in my view.

I did like the property as a whole and, if in the area again, would return there. Overall, I recommend it for a family looking for a good base from which to tour the area and for good golf options.

This is a resort that is definitely NOT a resort!! It not maintained: roof needs to be replaced, wallpaper is peeling, furnishings are old - chairs and tables look like they were bought in the 60's. The televisions are 19 inch "old style" - not flat screen. The bed linens gave us a rash; the shower head was loose. Also, outside the railings are coming out of the cement - very dangerous situation. In addition, there is no cell phone service or internet service unless you walk to the center of the golf course. In the Grandview restaurant where they ask that you make a reservation (which is not necessary), the food and service is mediocre and they do not have even the special on the menu. Service at the front desk was pitiful too - mostly rude and not helpful. This was our anniversary trip and was quite a step down from The White Rose Inn in the Dells which was fabulous.

Room Tip: Don't get a room here - not worth the money!

My husband and I stayed at the HOTR resort in February of 2011 for a birthday weekend getaway. At first we were a little bit creeped out because we appeared to be the only people there. This turned out to be true (there were only 8/80 rooms filled. But this meant we got exceptional personal service from the friendly staff. We had an outstanding meal of rack of lamb (that we still talk about) in their restaurant. They have a really great chef. The breakfast was also good (great omelette). It's very close to the HOTR attraction and in a beautiful setting. I agree with the other reviews that the rooms could use some updating, but we thought that was part of the charm of the place. It had a really cool retro vibe! We like offbeat stuff so it was right up your alley. But this may not be for everyone. The rooms were immaculately clean. There was a nice pool area. So if you're going to visit the HOTR which is truly bizarre in itself, stay at the HOTR resort to add to the mystique of your trip. Don't stay here if you're a more mainstream traveler expecting a Marriott-type place. We are actually visiting next weekend because we liked it so much the first time. I imagine this will become a new favorite and we will keep going back!!
