Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: Taliesin, the home, studio and country estate of Frank Lloyd Wright, is located in the hilly Driftless Region of southwestern Wisconsin near Spring Green. It is the name of Wright’s house as well as the 800-acre estate that includes buildings from all decades of Wright’s career. Taliesin has a commanding presence in Jones Valley, the watershed where Wright’s Lloyd Jones ancestors settled after immigrating from Wales in the 1860s. Taliesin was named in honor of his Welsh heritage, was the name of a druid bard, and literally means “shining brow.” Its many wings and terraces reach out around the ridge of the hill, embracing the site and standing as “brow.” Taliesin was the principal residence of Wright as a mature designer, and the valley was his inspiration and life-long laboratory for architectural designs and innovation. Taliesin in its three iterations (1911, 1914, 1925) represents the most complete embodiment of Wright’s philosophy of Organic Architecture. The Taliesin residence is the heart of a series of buildings that Wright designed for himself and his family members on the estate. Other buildings include: Romeo & Juliet Windmill (1896), Hillside Home School (1903), Tan-y-Deri (1908), Hillside Drafting Studio (1932), Midway Barn (1949), Hillside Theater (1952), and the Frank Lloyd Wright Visitor Center (1967).

We signed up for the two-hour house tour when we visited on Weds., July 5, 2017. We were lucky to have Cate as our tour guide, who has been mentioned positively in previous reviews. I have nothing but praise for Cate and the tour she conducted. She was enormously informative about FLW and the history of his involvement with the estate and the Taliesin buildings. The tour itself provided an in-depth experience of the studio, house, and surrounding grounds, which is much as Wright left it in 1959. Keep in mind that only the studio is airconditioned, so on warm summer days the non-airconditioned portions of the house can become rather steamy, although fans mitigate the heat somewhat. An excellent tour and highly recommended for those just learning about FLW and those familiar with him and his work.

Excellent tour. Tour guide very knowledgeable on Mr Wright. And the history of the Hillside School and the main housing complex. Afternoon rain storms common, so come prepared--Mr Wright did not use gutters and downspouts. Interior design breathtaking. Just look at everything from Mr Wright's "perfect height."

For a person that appreciates Frank Lloyd Wright this place is essential. The four hour tour is worth the price but you must be in shape to walk up a hill for about 1.5 miles. If you can't walk take the shorter tour. The guide named Shocky was excellent and very knowledgeable about Wright and his family.
