Owner description: Taliesin, the home, studio and country estate of Frank Lloyd Wright, is located in the hilly Driftless Region of southwestern Wisconsin near Spring Green. It is the name of Wright's house as well as the 800-acre estate that includes buildings from all decades of Wright's career. Taliesin has a commanding presence in Jones Valley, the watershed where Wright's Lloyd Jones ancestors settled after immigrating from Wales in the 1860s. Taliesin was named in honor of his Welsh heritage, was the name of a druid bard, and literally means "shining brow." Its many wings and terraces reach out around the ridge of the hill, embracing the site and standing as "brow." Taliesin was the principal residence of Wright as a mature designer, and the valley was his inspiration and life-long laboratory for architectural designs and innovation. Taliesin in its three iterations (1911, 1914, 1925) represents the most complete embodiment of Wright's philosophy of Organic Architecture. The Taliesin residence is the heart of a series of buildings that Wright designed for himself and his family members on the estate. Other buildings include: Romeo & Juliet Windmill (1896), Hillside Home School (1903), Tan-y-Deri (1908), Hillside Drafting Studio (1932), Midway Barn (1949), Hillside Theater (1952), and the Frank Lloyd Wright Visitor Center (1967).

“A must see if you're a FLW Fan”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 12, 2013

I have seen a lot of FLW houses over the past few years so this one was definitely on my list. Like many FLW homes, it is in disrepair. It seems that all FLW houses have roof issues, these lead to water issues and so it goes.

Our tour guide was fabulous. She was very well informed, could answer any question and provided good information on the house and FLW's life.

If you love prairie architecture, you have to see this house and if you see the house, the highlights tour is not cheap but seems to be the best option. Be sure to visit the small church to the left of the visitor center (a quick drive) because FLW is buried there and it's worth a look.

“Loving Frank's House”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 11, 2013

I've taken the 2 hour tour and the 4 hour tour. There a combination tour newly available that takes you to a combination of both. The house and the buildings down the road are really worth the time and money. They show the genius of the artist. If you have read "Loving Frank" you will recognize many of the descriptions of the area.
lhe guides are knowledgeble. Compared to the Scottdale- Taliesin West- the guides here give a less adoring portrait of the individualist Wright was. They have stories of his failures to pay bills, cutting down trees on neighbors lots and general mayhem he could create by his genius. It is really worth the price of the tour. The restaurant and gift items continue to provide quality products.

“Beautiful!”

Amazing, house is getting a bit run down, but you see the true genius. Ceiling heights are low so be careful if you are over 6 foot.

“Comfortable and interesting tour in beautiful place.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 24, 2013

A good straight-forward tour with a good guide. They've got a lovely gift shop and cafe. I found the School the most interesting part. Tours offered did not match info on official website (although the clerk there argued with me that they did), but there are enough tours throughout the day that it was easy to pick one without having advance reservations. (For that fifth star, I'd say it would have to be a bit better value re $ and I wonder if the big ticket price doesn't stop people from tipping their guides.

“Great Frank Lloyd Wright site.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 23, 2013

We took the 2 hour Highlights Tour and had a very informative guide who had been there for 7 years so she really knew her facts. We loved the home, the setting and the Hilltop School. Wish we had chosen the 4 hour tour!
