Surprised at the negative reviews. We have been coming here for years and years. It is basic delicious Wisconsin fare served in a cheerful, welcoming environment. The front lodge-looking bar area is full of tables and televisions, an indicator this restaurant regards its sports-viewing customers. Yes, the bar area can get congested during Green Bay Packers season, just make your way to the rear dining room if you don't want to partake in the festivities up front. Yes, it gets busy in tourist season and you do have to wait, we have waited under the overhang on the front porch during rain and it was not a big deal. We left twice in the past twelve years just because the line extended outside the front door so we returned later when the crowds thinned. When it gets busy in Door County, the local restaurants get mobbed and it is to be expected at Northern Grill since it is a family-oriented restaurant. As to the food, here is what we eat and have never had a bad meal: the Walleye sandwich, the Whitefish sandwich, the Walleye dinner, the Whitefish dinner, the Friday Night Fish Fry--not every restaurant offers a friday night variety of fish like the Northern Grill, the Saturday Night Beer Soaked Rib Special, the Sunday Night Rib and Spaghetti Special (if ribs are left over, otherwise it is spaghetti only) and of course, the pizza. Yes, it is gooey, nicely crusted, lots of ingredients, even the appetizer pizzas are delicious. The whitefish, the pesto bruschetta, and the white pizzas are particularly good. Remember this is not gourmet stuff, just good eating in a pleasant and lively atmosphere. I can understand if noisy and unruly families are asked to leave, the dining room is not that large and if children and/or adults get rowdy and obnoxiously loud, they are ruining the dining experience for everyone in the dining room. We have seen this happen more than a few times in Door County, especially with some tourists who believe they "own" the peninsula, behave outrageously and treat wait staff and fellow diners rudely. We typically go for lunch in high tourist season and dinner when the crowds taper off in shoulder season. As to the wait staff, the owner and the bartenders, they are a great group of people. We have a favorite server who remembers us every time we enter with a big smile and courteous and efficient service. Good food, good service, another affordable and reliable standby for us.
