I read previous reviews and kept them in mind as we stayed at Birchwood Lodge. I would say 50% of the negative parts are just circumstancial or not that big of a deal. We had a fabulous stay and didn't experience any of the issues reported in some of the reviews. What we did experience is all of the positive things that were stated and then some.
My boyfriend and I planned this 4 day getaway for a month. We packed the motorcycle in mid-April and set out from Oshkosh to Door County. Neither of us have been to Door County since we were kids. Now we were celebrating my 40th Birthday. We experienced a very miserable trip on the motorcycle from Sturgeon Bay to Sister Bay. It was raining and very cold. We stopped at the BP Gas station to warm up and rest a few minutes. Within minutes the rain turned to big sloppy snow. We traveled the remaining 7 miles in 45 minutes. When we found the Birchwood Lodge it was like a beacon in the night.
We were welcomed by a friendly smile. I can't seem to remember her name but she was very nice and checked us in promptly and gave us everything we needed to go to our room. They also accommodated us by letting us park the motorcycle under the car port at the front entrance.
The room was warm and clean. The atmosphere was very homey. The bed was very comfortable and I didn't have any aches or pains that I have experienced in other hotels. We stayed in the premiere suite with the jacuzzi. It was nice to turn up the heat and turn on the jacuzzi to thaw out.
We did have one problem that wasn't even a problem. The fire place wouldn't stay lit. We didn't know if it was the wind coming down the exhaust duct or a malfunction. The next day there wasn't any wind and it wouldn't stay lit. After the inch of snow melted we left for the day to sight see. We let them in to look at the fire place while we were gone. Even though we didn't want or need housekeeping, they ended up making our bed, washing the few dishes we used, and leaving us a bottle of wine. That was the nicest thing.
Turns out the fireplace is malfunctioning and they had a repair service even come and it still wouldn't stay lit. Besides that we had no problem. With heat in the room itself the fireplace really wasn't necessary. We stayed on the 3rd floor. We didn't hear any neighbors. The pool, hot tub, and sauna were very nice and relaxing. There was a wedding party and family staying there over the weekend. The breakfast was a nice and simple lay out. Enough to get you going for the day without a heavy breakfast. For those that wrote negative things about the style of breakfast they provide I want to suggest that be one of the things you ask before you book a place. I know I did and some don't provide anything. Roman was a pleasure to talk and chat with. He is a very upright guy and very informative.
We will always remember this trip. It was our first together and kid free. We had a great time and would recommend Birchwood to anyone. One major advantage to anyone looking to travel during the day around the peninsula is that Birchwood is literally at the the upper most part where Highways 57 and 42 meet. So you can head in any direction to begin your day of travel.
