“Give Mark a Hard Time”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 1, 2012

If you are looking for a great little local, inexpensive place for breakfast, lunch or a Friday fish fry - check out Cliff's Boathouse. I frequent Cliff's at least twice a week for breakfast - it's a small fun place. The food is good, the customer's are friendly and Mark the waiter is a trip. The restaurant is owned by Cliff who cooks along with his daughter and Mark the son is the waiter. Jay (not related) keeps the place clean and orderly. But Mark is the highlight - he's a role right out of Ed Debevics. A great guy, a great place for fun. Don't order decaf, because Mark will say "what's the point."

“Small-Town Cafe in an Urban Setting”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 26, 2011

I agree with the review provided by reluctant_traveller3, entitled “Good home-style fish fry” (August 20, 2011).

I would like to go one step further, however, for breakfast.

There are three ways to describe this place:
1) If you are looking for a simple farmer's breakfast that reminds you of the small town you grew up in, then this is the place.
2) This is a small-town cafe in an urban setting; a cafe you would find nostalgic in an Edward Hopper painting.
3) This is also the kind of cafe presidential candidates likes to pop in while in town to pose for photo ops with the "regular folks".

Mark, the Head Waiter, Maitre d', Beverage Manager, Bus Boy Mentor, Phone Answerer, Crowd Control Manager, Peeler of the Potatoes, Sports Afficionado, and "The Closer" (of the door), does a fantastic job.

Get here early on the weekends since this place fills up quickly. And be prepared to root for the Brewers.

If this place is slow (early Thursday and/or Friday mornings), this is a great date place (that is, if you can find someone to go out on a date early in the morning....)

Don't expect fancy atmosphere or fancy settings, you won't find them here. This is not going to impress anyone for a romantic dinner out. The building looks like a converted garage, and sits on a side-street a block off the river/harbor. That said, it has been a staple in Racine for years, so they are obviously doing something right. You have a good number of options here to choose from for your basic fish fry. Try it . . . I doubt you'll be too disappointed, as long as you take it for what it is.
