“Great Getaway!”
Reviewed August 19, 2009

This hotel is a little bit of relaxation hidden away in Prairie Du Chien. We loved our stay there. While it isn't one of the "big" waterpark hotels, it is a relaxing and quiet stay. Our kids enjoyed it just as much too. The restaurant had really good food, and the service was nice too. The ambience of this hotel is great. From the moment you step in the door, you are greeted by a friendly face. You feel like family, with the book share, and special treats they have. Breakfast was nice also. Special note: Don't miss out on the Eddie's Irish Pub on the main strip in Prairie either. The ambience is super, and the staff is great too. They love having kids join them too. Also super if you are hoping to catch the big game. This is an annual/bi-annual place we visit when in Wisconsin. Try the Ruben if you like them! If you are looking for a kicked back, and relaxed local, Prairie is the place. Enjoy!

We did not travel with our children, but will bring them back. Window in the water park was great, could get food and drinks right there. Great cookies. The women and the desk were awesome!

We stayed here for a family get together in March 2009. With many younger children in the group, we always stay at a waterpark. While this waterpark was small in comparison to some, it had everything younger children could want. There is a large slide for the older children and adults, and a small slide that is perfect for the younger kids. The whirlpool was also nice.
Our room was fine, no complaints. We would recommend the suite for bigger families, as that was very nice. Overall, a pleasant stay.

I have never felt the need to write about a hotel before this past weekend. First of all, the floor had not been vacuumed; there were Cherios cereal, grass, and a pop bottle cap on the floor of our room when we arrived. The hotel seemed to be about 80-90 degrees the whole time, so we kept the window open for fresh air (the outdoor temperature was 65). Then at night, the trains that kept passing (several times each night) were so loud, even after we closed the window, it was impossible to sleep between that and the noise of other guests running on the floor above us, talking, and watching t.v.. The walls must be paper thin! The restaurant food was horrible and over priced-a good restaraunt is just over the border in Iowa-called "Old man river". The so-called water park is a joke; our kids would have been really disappointed if they would have been with us. The pictures do not properly depict...all it is, is a small 4 foot pool with a slide. Maybe 4-5 yr old children might like it if they have never been to a real water park.

We wanted to do a mini-vacation with our 3 year old daughter along with our friends and their 2 1/2 year old. We wanted something where we could take our little ones swimming while our guys were out hunting/fishing during the day. This fit the bill perfectly for us and we plan to go back again next year!

WATER PARK: The water-park is small - 1 large slide, 2 basketball hoops/regular pool, large hot-tub/spa with waterfall/rock feature and a great kiddie area with mini-slide, tree/animal fountains, 'water-fall mushroom', and a walk through fountain/statue "tunnel" feature. This waterpark was the perfect size for little kids - we spent most of our 3 days here. They water is warm too! No cold chilly pools to worry about and plenty of towels. Note: The big slide is closed in the winter Mon-Wed. We didn't care since we had little kids with us, but others may want to note it.

ROOMS: We booked back in Nov. for our Thurs-Sun stay the weekend after New Year's. To save $ we shared a room with the other family of 3 who joined us on this trip. We booked a King with sleeper sofa - the rate was under $90.00/night and we had a nice size bathroom, mini-fridge and microwave (essential when traveling with little ones), and more than enough room for our 2 pack-and-plays.

PROBLEMS: The first night our heat went out. They were nice and moved us to the same size room across the hall (nicer, because the room with the king had french doors for privacy). They also reduced our rate for Sat. night to match Thurs/Fri. for the inconvenience - so this was really nice for them to do this for us - we didn't even ask! EXCELLENT customer service.

BREAKFAST: Awesome free breakfast - we expected "basic continental" but were surprised with waffles, eggs, sausage, biscuits/gravy, yogurt, juices, milk, etc.

OVERALL FACILITIES: Clean, comfortable and well maintained - yes, our heat didn't work the first night, but they more than made up for it. Views are great - bluffs on the western side of the hotel (front) - we had this view on the 1st night. The room we moved to faced the east side (back of hotel) which faces the further bluffs (can't see the river), but you can see the BUSY train tracks and our 2 little girls delighted in watching the trains go by.

Nearby: Cabela's - this is an outdoorsman's paradise, and interesting to visit even if you're NOT an outdoorsy person (like me!) our kids loved looking at the wildlife displays and the fish tank. Spring Lake Inn - great fish fry on Friday's, unbeatable Prime Rib on Saturdays - we went both Fri and Sat! GO EARLY and prepare to wait. Casino's - there are 2 on the IOWA side - we have done them in the past, not this time since we had our kids. EUNICE's: Local store that is an institution. Eunices has unique pickles, cheese, mustards, etc. Rural Route 1 Popcorn in Montfort and the Cheese store that is next door - on our way home, this is a traditional stop for us - both have been featured on Discover Wisconsin TV show - both feature amazing "only from WI" treats for your drive home!

We were delighted and already planning to come back again next winter to escape our cabin fever. We most likely will book Sun-Wed/Thurs. when there are less people at the hotel and rates are low - as long as we can get a similar rate to what we did this time (between 85-95.00). Skip the Dells, save your money and come here for a great water park experience with your young family!

  • Liked — Waterpark and breakfast at a great value.
  • Disliked — Heat broke had to move us but offered to adjust the rate for us which made up for it.

Stayed here for the weekend for my cousin's wedding and it was a very nice place. The rooms were Clean & spacious. The hotel was full, so there were a lot of people around, but the rooms were always quiet; could not hear people coming and going on our floor. Breakfast was nice for being free; got a lot of food and the coffee was good compared to the coffee in the room. Never ate at the restaurant, but did spend some time at the bar and the staff was very friendly and helpful. Some of my family spent a lot of time at the pool and they said it was a great place for the kids to play. I know my niece had a great time; she wanted to spend all day there.
Only issue we had was our keycards to get into the room. It sometimes did not work, so we had to get it activated again. Problem is cell phones and the cards, so make sure you keep them separate, so you will run into the same problem. I would stay here again.
