We rolled into Prairie du Chien late in the evening after a long day of thunderstorms, hail and just missing a tornado in LaCrosse on our drive from the Twin Cities. Unfortunately we still had 100 more miles to travel as well. We arrived at Coaches about 25 minutes before closing time with a tired and cranky 6 month old, expecting to be hussled through a meal of whatever didn't involve much work for the kitchen as they close for the night. Instead we were treated like family. The waitresses made it clear that they weren't in a hurry and we could take a much needed break from the road and give our daughter some time to settle down. We had an excellent meal that could have been home cooked, total bill for the two of us was less than $16. ALthough it was a small detail, the most amazing part was when I asked for a refill of coffee. Turned out the coffee pot had already been cleaned for the night. I would have been happy to go without, but the waitress insisted on brewing up another pot and then in addition to the refill gave me two large "to go" cups of coffee for the road. Coaches isn't anything fancy, but they do have great home cooking and the best service that you will find.
