Owner description: The Paine Art Center and Gardens is a historic estate with art galleries and display gardens, located in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The historic Paine estate serves as a multi-faceted museum for learning and inspiration. The museum preserves the mansion, surrounding architectural structures, and many of the interiors as they were created by founders Nathan and Jessie Kimberly Paine. Selections from the museum's art collection, much of which was acquired by Nathan and Jessie, are featured in the many rooms and settings of the estate. Outdoors, the Paine maintains and enhances numerous display gardens as "galleries" of horticulture with varied designs and thousands of plant specimens. In addition, the museum presents a wide variety of changing art exhibitions, from historical to contemporary, within the estate's galleries and gardens. The Family Discovery Gallery, located on the house's lower level, offers "hands on" activities about architecture, art, and gardens for people of all ages.

We booked the guided tour for the Nutcracker and at the time of booking we were told the maximum number of participants within a group was 15. We were extremely disappointed when we arrived to find out the group had 46 ! You felt like a herd of cattle being moved from room to room, it was such a let down. The castle itself is beautifully decorated but if you are looking for an evening of storytelling and relaxation this is not the venue you are looking for.

My wife and I visited Paine Art Center and Gardens in September, 2011.

Please visit the Center's website for an overview.

It is hard to cover adequately the range of antiques and art objects, paintings on exhibit, and splendid architecture to be found at the Paine. We spent well over an hour there, and could have spent much more time.

The staff are very friendly and not intrusive. All exhibits are professionally arranged.
As a gardener, I enjoyed the gardens at the Paine immensely! There are quite a number of them - all with a theme. I congratulate the gardeners for the great care they have taken in maintaining these gardens. Late September and there was still plenty to enjoy!

You can schedule an event at the Paine - a wedding for instance.

They have various educational programs going on all the time.

Cost of admission is minimal.

Great cultural experience - do not miss it!!!

Beautiful example of what someone can do with a great imagination and a lot of money. Reminded me of a smaller European castle. Interesting story and beautiful overall. the craftsmanship that went into creating the home was amazing. I loved all of the benches in the gardens, the flowers. Was sad that after all the years and money they spent building it they never had the chance to live in it.

Couldn't take photos inside even without flash. :-(

This is the first art museum I visited that had a separate floor for children's activities and I was happy it did. I have an overactive 5 year old who set off alarms on the other floors when he tried to climb under ropes, but we were entertaining a guest who was interested in seeing the art. Having a place to go where he could enjoy himself while the adults did "adult" viewing was great. There's a puppet show, activity kits, hands-on art geared to the season. The house is absolutely gorgeous. Don't expect this to be like most galleries you have ever seen. It's a mix of art and furniture- rooms set up just as they might have been when the house was being used as a family home. Lots of information about the history and former owners.
The gardens were lovely and spacious in July- a variety of annuals, perennials, bushes and grass. There are a couple water features. There was a wedding outdoors when we visited- makes for some nice photos.

And if you're here, don't miss a visit to the public museum across the street. In fact parking is mostly on street for the art museum, so you can park in the public museum lot and walk across to see this museum.

Although this is a small art gallery, the main attraction is the house itself. It is a gorgeous mansion from the 1920's. The gardens are also quite beautiful. If you are in the area, the Paine is worth a stop.
