We enjoyed our trip down the Kickapoo river--would do it again if we are in the area. We used the Titanic Canoe Rental--comfortable canoes and friendly owners

We took a group of kids (two 17, two 15 and one 6 year old) and all had a great time. Rented from Kickapoo Wild Adventures and so happy we did. The canoes were in great shape and the seats had back rests which was awesome after a couple of hours on the river. The owner of KWA was great, giving the kids a quick lesson on how to maneuver their canoe. When we arrived at our pick up point (15 minutes early) the owner was already there waiting for us to take us back to our car. Great service! Even though the river is super cold the kids still had fun playing in the water when we spotted a sand bars, etc. Everyone said this was the highlight of our camping trip.

We rented canoes from Kickapoo Wild Adventures and had a great time. We did go mid week so it wasn't to busy and we didn't run into any groups that were not "family friendly". KWA rents tubes, canoes and kyacks at great prices plus you get a longer ride since its located before the other places. Our canoes even had back rests! I forgot something on the bus that picks you up, the owner let me know and held it for me for several weeks until I could pick it up.

We spent two days on the beautiful Kickapoo River this summer and had two very different experiences. 5 adults and 8 kids went on a Sunday in late May and almost had the small, twisty river entirely to ourselves. We put in at the Kickapoo Wild Adventures site and paddled down to Bridge 5, and it wasn't until the bridge where we saw the only other people that day. While it was a little chilly when wet, it was still a great day. The scenery is incredible as you pass through the bluffs, and paddling the crooked river is so much fun.

Our experience yesterday, a Saturday in August, could not have been more opposite. The river was very crowded, loud, and full of drunks. This time we took 6 adults and 6 kids, started at the same location, and for the first 3 of the 6 hours we spent trying to dodge the cigarette smoke, the partiers at every takeout location, and drunks who think splashing everyone is a good time. At one bend, there was a group of 20 adults in there 40's and 50's who were extremely loud, completely hammered, and totally vulgar. I've been down many rivers and was shocked to see the amount of completely belligerent people, young and old. It was a very sad sight on such peaceful river with families and kids wanting to have a nice day together.

If you're looking for a relaxing and respectful place to float, do not try this on a Summer weekend. Go in the Spring, early Summer, or Fall. If you do want to paddle in the Summer with kids, please consider somewhere else. The language used, the amount of alcohol (one canoe probably had 50-60 cans of beer while another group was handing out shots to passersby), and the number of girls showing way more than I would want my kids to see was enough for us to write this place off until it either gets cleaned up or we know this behavior won't be the norm. It is one thing to enjoy a few beers or drinks while floating lazily down the Kickapoo, but it is another thing to be so drunk that you are falling out of your canoe or are handing out shots to everyone that comes near.

The Kickapoo River is famous for its ebb and flow so always check about possible flooding. It also is VERY windy which makes it fun for canoeing - BUT you can easily underestimate the amount of time it will take you to cover the miles but that's part of the adventure. Just the perfect thing to do on a lazy summer day and of course, the autumn is stunning!! The river goes through lots of small towns and I like the portion north of Soldier's Grove the best. So check your map, talk to the locals and start your adventure now!!
