“A Nice Experience - Excellent Value”
Reviewed January 22, 2013

The Stoney Creek Inn in Onalaska - La Crosse Wisconsin is one-of-a-kind. The staff are welcoming and efficient. The rooms are spacious and the decor is very pleasing - it has this log-cabin, northern woods touch with a bit of kitsch thrown in with all the modern conveniences one would want in a hotel.

Price was very reasonable. The hotel and room were clean. Breakfast was spartan, but, perhaps that was because I stayed there new year's eve visiting my great aunt and the rest of the hotel was booked out to a wedding! In fact, 10.00 on the nose, the staff pulled everything out lickety-split!

The pool is great - heated with a outdoor section - great in the -15C (0 F) outside temperature. I'll come back again - great location too, right near the shopping and the interstate. Good restaurants and eateries all around.

Room Tip: Bring your ear plugs just in case there is a big wedding!

Clean property along with friendly people. Scott the GM was very gracious in accommodating us. Complimentary Breakfast was perfect. Bartender was an awesome guy that was in college and very helpful. Awesome pools for kids. Thank you to all for giving us a good nights sleep before the basketball tournaments.
Thank you.

Once again, we were visiting family over Christmas week and decided to stay one night at the Stoney Creek Inn in Onalaska. My husband booked the room about a week and a half before our stay, and they only had three rooms left: all with just one king-sized bed in them. We have three kids, but they let us book the king-sized bed room anyway. We brought with sleeping bags and the kids slept on the floor.

When my husband was checking in, he overheard one of the employees tell someone on the phone that the hotel was completely booked that night--it's a popular place! Even though it was full, it wasn't at all loud or crowded. We had no problem finding parking in the parking lot.

The employees are very friendly and helpful here. We called down to the front desk to ask for a few extra blankets for the kids. Someone came up immediately (like, my husband had barely hung up the phone) with the blankets and gave them to us with a big smile. Great service!

We were in room 203, which was a perfect location. Nearly at the end of a quiet hall, it didn't get much foot traffic. The pool area was directly down two flights of stairs, which was very convenient. The room wasn't huge, but fine for us. It was very clean and cutely decorated. Plenty of room on the floor for the kids's sleeping bags. Room had a mini-fridge and microwave.

We swam at night, and the pool area was busy but not packed. Most people were in the (awesome) hot tub. Luckily it's pretty big. The outside pool was open yet too! The inside and outside pool connect. You can swim through an area in the wall to the pool outside. The pool was a bit chilly for me (I like my pool water almost tepid before I'll go in), but it was fine for dh and the kids. They swam outside several times. We swam again in the morning around 7:30 and there were only a few other people (adults) in the pool/hot tub. If you're wanting to avoid crowds and/or young children, probably the best time to hit the pool is early morning (pool/hot tub open at 6 a.m.!). Oh--another tip. When you put your room card into the locked door to the pool area, pull the door handle UP. We kept trying the pull it down and it wouldn't open. Several other people seemed to have this issue too.

The complimentary breakfast was good: biscuits and gravy for the hot item. Also quite a few donuts and muffins to pick from, french toast (heat yourself), bagels, toast, cereals, juices, coffee, milk. They had some apples and bananas in a bowl too. We ate as soon as the breakfast area opened (7 a.m. on weekends). When we checked out shortly after 8, the place was already very packed. So best to eat as soon as it opens!

I'm sure we'll probably stay here again--we have family in the area, so visit at least once a year or so.

Room Tip: Push handle UP when unlocking the door to the pool area!

We were planning to meet part of our family for Christmas in Onalaska. Since much of the family was traveling from a distance, we asked for rooms by each other after we were told there were plenty of rooms for the day we requested. We were told that per policy the hotel would not guarantee adjacent rooms. We had to go to a different hotel, who had no problem with the request. We will no longer be staying at Stoney Creek because of this policy.

Dear judyger,
One of the challenges we have because of our unique variety of room types is accommodating requests for ‘guarantees,’ particularly for adjacency of location. Most hospitality vendors have perhaps three types of rooms, king, queen and suite, for example, so accommodating such requests is relatively easily done. Our La Crosse location has fifteen different room types and price points, including standard and deluxe, expanded sizes, rooms with bunk beds, fireplaces, whirlpools, rooms that are handicap accessible, rooms we call cottages with mini kitchens and so on. These room styles and differing price points are purposely all intermingled within the hotel to provide variety and unique experiences. Add to that the many guests who are in house and extend their stays beyond their original reservation and you can see why trying to offer guarantees of togetherness will most often lead to greater disappointment for our guests when we are unable to fulfill the guarantee. It is more out of providing honest guest services than it is a ‘policy’. I am deeply sorry that we were unable to accommodate your family for your holiday get-together and certainly hope you had a joyous celebration. We just want you to know that if we could guarantee with 100% certainty, we certainly would. Thank you for sharing and allowing us to acknowledge your disappointment with a sincere apology and explanation.

We just spent the weekend at the Stoney Creek Inn. We booked our room about a month in advance of our weekend getaway. The web site lead us to believe they had a waterpark and a bar/resteraunt where you could get something to eat. There is a small pool and you can order a frozen pizza at the bar along with some deep fried choices (Chicken fingers, pretzel bites and mozarells sticks). So if your hungry, you have to get in your vehicle and drive someplace as there really is no place you can walk to from the hotel. Rooms were average. Nice Bathroom and shower. I would stay somewhere else if we ever go back to onalaska. All the staff at the hotel were very nice and accomadating. We wanted to park, have some drinks and eat and go back to the room. That wasn't happening here unless you want frozen pizza!

Room Tip: Make sure you request the 3rd floor if you want a view.

Dear 1215,
On behalf of our management and staff, I sincerely apologize that you found our website even “a little misleading.” We have reviewed our site and when navigating back and forth between our distinctly different offerings it is certainly conceivable that our one Waterpark Resort could hold your attention as a fun destination. It does not go unnoticed that we had two reviews on this same subject nearly back to back, so we’ll take a long hard look at our site and it’s clarity. Thanks for your 3 star rating and your kind remarks about our staff.
