One of the great bike rides in the Coulee area of Onalaska is no doubt the Great River State Park Trail – miles upon miles of well-groomed, flat trail that skirts along Lake Onalaska at Brices Prairie and on its way through Midway, Holmen and eventually Trempealeau on the Mississippi River. Good eats can be hard to come by along this long stretch, but Red Pines Bar and Grill, just minutes off the trail on Cty. Rd. Z, is a perfect bikers' rest stop. Situated overlooking one of the back sloughs of Lake Onalaska, there are few places that can as easily capture the essence of the Coulee Region lake living from its outdoor seating arrangement. Known for its pizza, we enjoyed a Key West salad, including a well-seasoned and cut selection of chicken, and a very good cup of daily special vegetable soup along with a build-your-own-style turkey sandwich on marble rye. Watching the sun flicker over the lush backwaters of Lake Onalaska in the background while sipping a Sierra Nevada made the few extra bike peddles worthwhile.
