We stopped in on Sunday, July 20th for a quick bite to eat. We found a table in the back which turned out to be a mistake. The backroom area was filled with an abundance of clutter. It may have been fine had we just drank but do not order food from there. 2 days later, myself and the other gal in our party of 4 are still suffering from what believe was food poisoning. We have it narrowed down to the pasta salad.

Their chili and their burgers are must tries. They have a huge array of bar foods and it is all affordable and tasty. The staff is friendly but they have no problem using profanity and gossiping in front of the customers. I did not have a problem with this but others might. I definitely recommend eating and drinking here.

We did a walkabout New Glarus and tried to stop in as many of the bars and restaurants as we could. Sportsman's was in the guide book so we decided to give it a try. It was an absolute DIVE BAR. We opted to sit at the bar and were immediately greeted by a very friend bartender. We ended up spending more time at the Sportsman's than any other establishment because the bartender was so friendly as were the other patrons sitting near us at the bar. We ordered the pizza, which was recommended, and were so happy we did. It was excellent homemade pizza with lots of cheese! The man next to us ordered a burger and specifically requested silverware - once we saw the burger we knew why - it was mammoth. It looked delicious! So don't let the crappy interior fool you...if you want great bar food - this is the place to stop.

We stumbled onto the Sportsman's after doing the New Glarus brewery tour and a stop a Puemple's tavern, both are must sees if in New Glarus. We expected to stay for one or two beers and ended up staying for hours for one simple reason - the place is a hoot.

Like all New Glarus bars they have a variety of the local brews on tap including Spotted Cow, Two Women, Moon Man and Serendipity. But it was the bartenders, May and Mike who would bring us back. They were young and lively and quick with the next round. Cheese balls on the bar is just "cheesey" so what's not to like?

Now, this isn't a place for everyone. It does qualify as a dive bar although the food looked good. Others said it was great but we just drank. The bar itself is long and old style wood. Classic little four person tables like a little cafe lined a wall. The bar itself is also long with a bookshelf stuffed with books way in the back. Funny to see it there. Can't see anyone reading. A few folks played pool. Cases of various New Glarus brewery brands were stacked everywhere.

A tour bus let out and the place filled up and really started to rock. May and Mike were moving fast. No table waitress so everyone bellied up to the bar and we were passing money and drinks back and forth, but we met lots of people and had a heck of a time. The regulars have frequent flyer cards and earn free drinks. Too funny. If you are there on your birthday you get five free drinks - seriously.

If you're looking for old world atmosphere don't stop. But if you are looking for fun you may stay longer than you think!
