Me and my family have been going to new glarus we were happy as is. so we decided to stay longer but in mt horeb. My parents mentioned the karakahl! A cute 70's place with a huge pool and restaurant and a game room! So we took the drive. We drove in to the untamed pothole filled lot of the karakahl only to find mt horeb's worst eyesore, no restaurant or game room. me and my family were scared to check in. so my father went to go check in. no one was to be found at the front desk. i decided to open the car door to look in the pool door. what i found was a very large pool area with the most mold i have ever seen. i looked at the pool through the window it was filled with algae and a broken hose at the bottom. the ceiling tiles were missing and were at the bottom of the pool. my parents were only there 10 years ago. and was never in poor shape i remember myself in that pool. since we coudnt find the main desk or check in. and were scared we ran to this clean and spotless motel called VILLAGE INN down the street. and when we checked in there the woman at the desk said "oh my, i would never recommend the karakahl. the best part is the village inn is right off of military ridge. the rooms have dtv boxes but no cable. the rooms have dtv, a fridge/freezer, big bathroom and beds. and a great greek restaurant is in walking distance too. no frills but is great for a 2 nighter!

It had been twenty years since we had seen the inn and something seemed wrong when we pulled in. It looked sleazy everywhere, not the pristine place of years before. The check in was very unfriendly. We were told to turn into the parking lot by the pool end of the building. I was afraid to take my fully loaded vehicle into the lot for fear of hitting one of the eight inch deep holes that were several feet across. Luckily they were placed such that I could straddle them. Upon entering the room the stink that usually causes us to just leave was present. We were too tired to try finding something else so we stayed. There are no electrical outlets anywhere near a mirror so drying hair or shaving was impossible. No coffee in the room, no note paper, no wake up call, and no one in the lobby at 5:30AM the next morning (it was locked). No pool as it was being repaired.

The most preposterous thing was the fire excape map on the door of the room. It still featured the front half of the hotel (that had disappeared sometime in the past), halls and escape exits and all!

What a waste!

We had a very nice stay, the rooms were clean, very comfortable beds and spacious, the Olympic size pool was a lot of fun. The staff was very helpful and freindly. The motel is under construction and some upgrades are in progess, over all the location and price would be worth your stay. It is a older 1960's style motel, architect by Frank Loyd Wright ,so if your looking for a Hilton type hotel, then you'll have to stay in Madison. The Mt. Horeb is very quiant Norwegian style town with very friendly people and clean. All your needs are there and more...

The good: Clean bathroom and relatively effecient check-in/out, would be beautifully retro/architecturally important with the right owners . The bad: Large holes in side of boxpring (looked as if had been stored somewhere and mice had gotten into it), uncomfortable beds, room not as clean as could be, dirty windows, overgrown landscaping, no restaurant/lounge, small tv, no a/c, website photos are VERY deceiving.

Perhaps I should have checked here first for reviews! It hasn't changed since the reviewer in August 2005 described it with weeds all over the parking lot, flowers and greenery have not been tended to for some time. When we checked in we were advised that the air conditioning wasn't working but would be fixed within a couple of hours. We stayed two days and there was no air at all during that tme - fortunately they provided fans and the evenings were cool. And on the morning of our second day, we had no hot water for showers!!! They did give us a 50% discount. The website makes it look so good .. with the troll pictures, etc., but that is not the way it was. The pool has mold all over the ceiling fans, the windows are a mess, the ceiling in the pool area looks like it is about to come down. There was so much dust on the panelling in the room that we wrote "please clean me" on the walls - however, nothing was done to resolve that issue either. Unfortunately there is not a "no dot" rating for these types of places.
