“Don't stay there now.”
Reviewed August 24, 2013

Maybe you get what you pay for, but I think that it was even worse than the cheap rate would indicate. Obviously once upon a time it had a wonderful place, but now it is rundown and creepy. The pool is empty, there is garbage around the outside, carpet is dirty, the sheets have holes in them. One bit of hope for it is that there was a new manager who seemed to be anxious to please us, so maybe he should be given a chance to improve it.

The price, for starters, was a great deal. The motel was clean, it has a small gaming room for kids, a pool table, and a giant pool. The perimeter is all lit up with really white lights, they have indoor and outdoor rooms-we had an outdoor. The room was clean, and the place was nice and quite, what more can you ask for from a $55 room?

Room Tip: The honey moon suite has a nice whirl pool.

This place must have been spectacular in its time and it has some really cool architectural features that still exist. There are not many hotels in the area and we wanted to be able to walk to The Grump Troll, so this was our only choice.
The bed was clean & comfortable, room was spacious with fridge & TV. We weren't looking for anything fancy and that is exactly what we got.
CONS:
You can hear all the outside and next room noises.

I booked a two night stay for my partner and I a solid month before our trip. I really did some decent research on hotels in the area, and I felt overall, that the vibe was "old school" but cool and good. So I figured that we'd be okay. We are not a very picky couple, and we have stayed at some other "older" and "non-fancy" hotels and motels through the years.
So, we pull up, check in and go to our room. We tried to weave around the red flags that we noticed during the check-in process:
1. Musty smelling main office.
2. A number of half naked men sitting in front of each room with tiny grills, drinking and shouting to each other.
3. An empty pool that looked decrepit.
4. A water fountain that looked like it hadn't seen water in a few months; just housing some dirt near the drain.

Nope. It's okay, we thought. Let's check the room; sure it will be fine.

Fail. Badly.
1. The walls looked as if they were pulling away from the foundation (including the wall paper).
2. The tub was "oily".
3. The floorboards looked decrepit.
4.The mattress had holes and the sheets did not look clean. They might have been, but I have worked in a hotel before and I "know" cleanliness of linens.
5. Musty old smell.
6. We could hear every single word from the people outside. Every. Word.

To be fair, when we agreed that we just couldn't do it and wanted a refund, the man at the front desk did give us our refund. He was disappointed and offered us another room, but we were just not comfortable there - under any circumstance.

THe only good thing was the price. Water still not in the pool, dirt, pot holes, thin walls poor women next to us must have had a serious problem coughing the whole 21 hours we were there. If your stopping in Mount Horeb stay at a friends house or find a place in Madison...

This was such a great hotel at one time. Too bad an investor won't buy and restore it to its original glory.

The rate was very good but I don't think the furniture or decorating has been updated in over 20 years. Carpet had holes in it. Lighting was very dim. Not enough outlets to use for business/computer needs. Old TV with limited channel availability. It did have a refrigerator & microwave which was nice feature. Bathroom very outdated with low lighting. Caulking had mold on it. Difficult to put on makeup there or in bedroom area because of light issues. No overhead lights near closet area which is also where the interior entrance door is located.

Once great swimming pool is empty. The exterior needs a good coat of paint. Paint was peeling everywhere. The hotel just needs some

Not many rooms rented but the clerk chose to put all of us next door to each other rather than space us out. Needs soundproofing. I could hear every sound in rooms nearby plus car doors slamming, etc. I requested a ground floor because of health issues. Received one but ice machine required going down a flight of stairs anyway.

It is conveniently located near a Walgreens and several restaurants.

This hotel had very reasonable rates for staying overnight for the Cave of the Mounds and Little Norway but probably wouldnt recommend it. VERY VERY OLD ---
POSITIVES: Air worked Spacious KING room Clean sheets/bedding Refrig Micro NO COFFEE maker though Convenient to area stores/restaurants
NEGATIVES: Outside needed painting/ Swimming pool NO WATER/Looked abandoned Dirty Towel on back of Bathroom door NO WI FI in our room only 45 in other area of hotel \
It's a good potential to fix it up for that reality show on TV cant remember the name of it. But if they would fix it up like the NORWEGEIGN hertitage it had I think they would get many more visitors. It needs TLC!!!!

Room Tip: Not 202 for Wifi
