My family and I stopped for lunch at The Thirsty Whale on a Tuesday afternoon around 3:30pm for a late lunch. Since there were only another 5 families dining at that hour, we had no problem getting a table (picnic table) right on the water. I'd say one huge attraction of this place is the setting as if you can get a table on the water, you can't beat the scenery. The inside of the place looks more bar-ish than restaurant so consider this if dining during peak times or when weather will not permit outdoor seating.
Our waitress was pleasant enough. Drink orders arrived quite timely (in plastic glasses, but hey, we were outside so I wasn't complaining). Our dining orders were taken and our food arrived faster than any of my family predictions.
My wife ordered a mexican salad which looked huge. OK, I helped her finish it and it was quite good. Good blend of salad and typical taco salad ingredients. The typical Tostitos brand tortilla chips around the edge made it for me. It was more of traditional nachos but with more salad.
My 15 year old daughter appreciated her bacon cheeseburger. It looked great and it was gone before I could ask whether she was enjoying her food. My son ate off the children's menu and had the chicken strips. 3 meaty strips come with nicely seasoned fries. I was only able to steal a few fries from him which were delicious by my taste.
I had the Perch Po Boy. My sandwich was much larger than expected. With a hoagie bun, it came with 4 large pieces of perch, lemon and tartar sauce. The fish was done to perfection and the sandwich was fabulous.
Most sandwiches come with potato chips (not home made, typical store bought quality potato chips). You can substitute for fries, but plan to pay extra. I didn't need the extra fries so I was quite satisfied.
The rest of the menu looked relatively typical for tourist town mid-tier dining. Lots of sandwiches, a few salads, I wouldn't say anything specialty jumped out at me.
For a nice "typical" family meal, not too fancy but enjoyable with the setting, this was a good experience.
