We had fresh salmon friend rice that was very tasty. The yaki noodles with shrimp and lots of veggies, egg and ginger was perfectly salted and with zingy black pepper, very good. Mugi cha roasted iced tea was a refreshing addition….some serious comfort food. The red retro stove next to the turquoise 1950s chairs was very cheery. A comfy enough dining room but a bit of a din wit the loud ice machine right in the dining room. The staff was efficient and very nice. And the vacuum coffee maker (Russian she said) was a kick, a piece of art really.

Along the historic High Street in downtown Mineral Point is a new restaurant serving hand made ramen, gyoza, and other Japanese foods. It's located in an old turn of the century building and has high tin-tiled ceilings and 1950s tables and chairs (on one side). There is even an old red 1950s range for decor in the same area. On the walls are Japanese restaurant advertisements such as "Yakitori" and "Yaki-ika." These are in Japanese and aren't really on the menu. There are also some large ukiyoe prints, one by Utamaro, decorating the walls.

As each meal is prepared to order with fresh ingredients and not frozen, it takes a little longer than a similar restaurant in Japan. The ramen comes in a seafood, shoyu (soy), miso, and chicken broth, with optional ingredients of pork and eggs (if not already included). The chicken broth was more like a Korean style, with some La-yu oil and other vegetables added which usually aren't in a Japanese ramen. The gyoza (pot stickers) were handmade dough and hand-rolled, then steamed and fried with an authentic Japanese flavor.

Other items on the menu were curry rice, manju (steamed bread), and a variety of maki rolls.

You had your choice of Sapporo or Asahi Super Dry for Japanese beers, and a choice of 4 sake brands, one of which was Otokoyamazake from Asahikawa in Hokkaido.

The proprietor helped out the wait staff but mainly talked with the customers while his wife and others(?) worked in the kitchen preparing the food.

I'll be back over when I can make the drive or am in Mineral Point as I live 20 miles away.

Everything made from scratch including noodles. Limited menu sticking to basics, yet best Japanese food I've had anywhere...including on both coasts. Serves Japanese beer and and several saki choices.

The husband and wife owners work the kitchen and are lovely people.

Went here for a fun snack with a good friend. Got there around 5:10 pm. One other table was seated, a family of 5. A person was ordering take out. The server came by shortly to say hello, then disappeared for 13 minutes. He brought our beverages and took our order. After we had waited 35 minutes I inquired about our order. Five more minutes he said. So it did arrive in 5 minutes. The wait was 55 minutes, there was no explanation, and no apparent reason for the delay. I suppose they forgot us or some such, though we were front and center for the entire time.

This place could not be cuter, its very welcoming the moment you come thru the door. And the food is outstanding. It redefines comfort food - homemade ramen noodles! They are an adorable couple and their good intentions come thru every bite.
