Tried once, had good critic reviews in the past. I chose Couscous Royale which I thought was excellent. Spouse chose the bouilliabase, which faltered by comparison to others he's had. Since there is another better option in Milwaukee, we've not been back.

We always go for the French Onion Soup...it's medicinal on a hangover. That with crusty bread and a side of pate is all we need to feel better...service can be spotty so best to just sit at the bar or bar area. Good value and tasty crepes. The garden in back is nice to sit in the summertime. The Bordeaux wine special is usually a good bet as well.

Before I jump into the complete review of Chez Jacques - let me say just one thing - the food was fantastic. And that's where the good part of this review ends.

Let's talk about what was wrong with Chez Jacques - the service. To me - nothing kills the mood more than watching regular diners receive better service than you. This restaurant was clearly old school - you know - the type of restaurant where if the waitstaff don't know you by your first name - then forget about it. You will be subjected to the back of the line until you have earned your way to the front. Generally this is done by tipping the waitstaff very well so they can start remembering you (and of course, your name).

We were the second table to be seated. Two tables were seated after us by approximately 15 to 20 minutes. These two tables were graciously received - handshakes, laughter, and all. These two tables also had their drinks AND food before us. Once they received their food - they were checked on every two to five minutes to make sure everything was ok. Our food came out dead last. Our server could have cared less about us, or what we thought. And the place was not even busy.

I clicked No for "Romance" to spare embarrassment for any of you guys who might be considering this place as a first date place. It's not. Stay away. You will have better luck at your local Applebee's Neighborhood Grill and Bar.

Now, with all of that said - if you are looking for good french food, and if you are not in a hurry (and also have thick skin) - than consider this place for a good casual lunch. And then if you like it - get to know the waitstaff so you can start earning your frequent flier miles. Before you know it - you will be eligible to wear the Chez Jacques dinner jacket with pride.

We were there @ 7PM. Parked on the street in front of the restaurant with no problem. We were greeted immediately. Our server was good. She brought a whiteboard and put it on a chair by our table, explained the choices well, and left it for us to consider. We had crab cakes as an appetizer. They were good, but we both thought they needed a little something, maybe just a squeeze of lemon. One of us had the beef bourgignon. It was a good sized portion and tasty. True to French dish. The meat was tender, had 3 little pieces of grizzle. The other entree was a special of salmon/spinach en croute. Very good in an amazing sauce. The salad with grilled veggies was made with fresh ingredients. We had the best creme brule we have had anywhere. It was parfait! The waitress helped me pick a glass of wine that I liked. I told her it was my birthday and she said "Thank you for letting us know". But then there was no special gesture for celebrating after that. We had coffee, espresso and a decaf. The decaf was the best I have ever had. This is a clean, well run restaurant with courteous and helpful staff. Total with 4 drinks, 2 coffees, 1 salad, 1 appetizer, 2 entrees was $104 before tip. A nice dinner out. Well done. The bathroom was very nice and clean as well. Great place!
