Came with a group and allowed the chef to pick out which tapas he'd serve. In a word, fantastic. Tremendous range and flavors. Prices were moderate and service was excellent. Neighborhood is in the process of redeveloping but restaurant is cozy with valet service. Recommended.

The concept here--international tapas--might not fly in a big city where a rich array of cuisines are well represented. All the more reason to sample the pleasures of La Merenda while passing through Milwaukee. Figure on five small plates for two reasonably hungry road-trippers. All ingredients are locally sourced and lovingly prepared. Our favorite was the ambrosial ravioli stuffed with Wisconsin cheese and crowned with kale and shredded pork, but lake trout with green beans and buttery marcona almonds was a close second. Sadly, the kitchen had run out of lamb kibbeh. We weren't wowed by the heirloom tomato salad, but honestly: aren't heirloom tomatoes a tad over-rated? Service was on the perfunctory side, but we'd happily retur if we pass this way again. One more big plus for La Merenda: lots of care and flavor per dollar. You can spend a lot of money to eat a good meal in Milwaukee, but you don't have to. La Merenda is a find.

I loved La Merenda because it truly is an international tapas bar. The menu is fantastic, so I would suggest trying as much as you can! I went there with my sisters, and we ordered six different items - and we loved them all. The benefit of tapas is that if you don't like something, then you know you can leave it and you did not waste a lot of food - with La Merenda, though, you won't waste one crumb.
The only piece that was a little disappointing was the service. Not terrible, but we definitely did not receive the attention in terms of beverage filling that we had hoped for.

The food, though, was enough to make me want to go back there again!

My boyfriend and I went there with another couple We made reservations and found that even making reservations a day ahead still left us with either an early (5pm) or late (9pm) reservation. It's a small place but I thought that the size made the experience even better. It's tapas style so we ended splitting 11 dishes (9 main dishes and 2 desserts). From the kibbeh to the empanadas, everything was delicious! We ordered in rounds and the waiter was tentative but not hovering. We ended up spending nearly 2 hours there and never once felt rushed to get out. The dishes were small and the price ($5-11/plate) can add up but it's definitely worth every penny. I would recommend the spinach ravioli and Jamaican jerk trout (it's a bit spicy so careful).
