Milwaukee has had a plethora of new small plate restaurants open up over the last couple of years and AP is one of the better ones. Celebrated a birthday dinner with a group of 8 adventurous eaters and I think we ate 75% of the menu. There were a few misses and many of the dishes were a bit undersalted but overall the meal was excellent. Definitely have the octopus, sea scallops and the desserts! They have a great craft drink menu but I thought the drink prices were a couple of dollars too high given the fruit punch glass they were served in. Overall I would recommend this restaurant for its' unique dishes, great service and fun atmosphere.

Went to dinner with 4 girlfriends. Because there were many things on the menu many of us wanted to try, we ordered a bunch of things (including the squash and brussel sprouts which I could have made a meal of alone). Everything we had was delicious (pork buns, dates) and our server was helpful and friendly and easily accommodated my friend's 4 month old. Because the burger had just made a national list, two of us ordered it and I was a very good burger with hand-cut fries that were tasty. The garlic aioli served with it really made the burger. For a Tuesday night, it was packed, so I was glad we had a reservation. When it's busy, it is very noisy, so conversation can be tough.

“Mostly hits, a couple of misses”

We love tapas style restaurants so were anxious to try this new one. We tried a variety of plates and for the most part they were very good. They have an expansive selection of wines and craft beers. Since there were four of us we had a reservation and were seated immediately. Would love to sit at the bar and eat if I was just with my wife. A very dynamic place. We ordered in waves, which is what tapas is all about. Favorites were the kale salad and the butternut squash. The gorgonzola and pecans were great additions to the squash dish. Disappointments were the bacon wrapped dates and the shortribs. The shortribs would have been good served hot. The first serving we received was simply cold, but was quickly replaced – unfortunately that serving was just lukewarm. Truly the only real disappointment of the evening. Finished by sharing two deserts – which were both outstanding. The chocolate fans really loved the molten chocolate. Would definitely go back.

“Good, not great”

I and three other diners enjoyed several plates here: baby octopus, tuna carpaccio, pork buns, sweetbreads, scallops, duck salad, cheese plate, oysters, chocolate bread pudding, and a walnut tart. The oysters were fantastic, but one can hardly credit the chef for shucking good oysters. The rest of plates ranged from good-the duck salad, carpaccio, octopus, and walnut tart-to "meh"-the scallops, sweetbreads(mushy and under seasoned), cheese plate (minuscule), pork buns (greasy and under seasoned), bread pudding (ok, just not wonderful).

In all, the menu is far, far, more interesting than the food. Interesting, because this is exactly what I thought of Magister's other venue, Crazy Water.

“Not impressed”

Despite seeing a number of favourable reviews we did not enjoy our evening here for a birthday celebation. Things did not start off well, on a wintery Milwaukee night a warmer welcome would have been appreciated. While the maitre d seemed busy with something when we came in, the server who was free, failed to acknowledge us as she walked by & we were left standing at the door for an unacceptable amount of time before being shown to our table.
Our server was very attentive & pleasant, but the cocktail order was very slow in being delivered. We felt that the wine waiter did not steer us in the right direction, serving a somewhat lackluster Cab / Merlot blend, when a full bodied style had been requested. Repeated requests for a sweeter wine to pair with the foie were met with a persistent attempt to persuade acceptance of much drier wines; while informed advice is always welcomed by our group this got to be a little irritating. It would have been better to know that ones request for a sweet style,such as a Sauternes, was not able to be fullfilled by the glass.
We understood that the dining style was "small plate", presumably to fascilitate sharing, but the delivery was a little strange. Our party of 4 received 2 salads, the foie & an order of spaetzle first, followed by another of spaetzle, goulash & butternut squash to follow. The spaetzles had a stange sweet, cheesy flavour that both in our party did not like.. ( one order was comped after the recipient expressed displeasure which was appreciated). The goulash comprised of 2 &1/2 cubes of meat, copious sauce & two slices of grilled bread ..I think this was way overpriced . While the flavour & preparation were both very nice, that was avery skimpy portion, definitely not "sharable"!!. The foie could have been a little closer to room temperature to enhance its creaminess, it was somewhat too firm.
Overall we had expected better all around & maybe something in the way of softer furnishings or such, to absorb some of the noise & cheer up a snowy night, could have helped the overall impression.
We probably will not return given the plethora of fine options in town.
