This is the true German restaurant in MIlwaukee where the "locals" go for great food and atmosphere. The tourists can go down the street to the more popular German restaurant. Of all the restaurants in Milwaukee (and there are a lot of great ones!), this is my favorite. Go for the sauerbraten or their sampler platter. You will truly enjoy the atmosphere. Valet parking available.

Highly recommended. Less touristy than Mader's. The food is excellent and the service is friendly and unpretentious.

Karl Ratzsch's is a throw back to a slowly fading tradition of great German food in Milwaukee. The location is fantastic the interior is amazing and the service and food are always good. The prices are reasonable and you won't leave hungry. I hope they are around for next 100 years!

On this my first time in Milwaukee I did the research and found very good reviews for Karl Ratzsch's. No doubt. It was wonderful from atmosphere to service to food. The sauerbraten was truly the best I've ever had — except, of course, for my German mother-in-law's. And, the price was right. We made reservations for the early bird special on Friday night. With or without a special price, I will be back. A must for German food lovers, and others since the menu offered other choices as well.

We are overall very satisfied with the food. We had for starters onion rings (way above what you get in fast food) and the beer cheese sauerkraut dip which is really exceptional (it looks like french onion soup but much thicker/richer). We then had goose shank (taste like french goose confit) and baked pork shank (a daily special). Both were really tasty. The pork shank is so big that you could share it among two people (or don't take starters). The weiss beer franciskaner is really lovely, light and tasty.
The staff is very friendly. The check is a bit on the high side (entrees are about $30)
