I was recently devastated at the news that this fabulous place is closed. I have lunched and dined here for over 20 years and it was always a great experience. The quality of both the food and the service were top notch. I am afraid that too many people gravitated away from here and into the new "trendy" places that have sprung up in the 3rd Ward area. So sad to see such a wonderful place closed after so many years.

I used to like this place, but, apparently, not enough people did. The door is locked, and the sign on the window says "Equipment and furnishings for sale."

To be a good restaurant, everything on the menu has to be at least "good". The Third Ward Caffe may be getting a bit complacent, not being vigilant on each menu item. We recently ordered a Margarite Pizza to start a meal and found it to be a frozen crust with a cardboard flavor. The first clue was the exact circular shape of the crust - clearly factory made, not kitchen made. One bite confirmed that the preparation involved opening your grocer's freezer. When we pointed this out to the wait staff, there was no attempt to substitute or even just take it off the bill. With all the restaurants in the Third and Fifth Ward, it may be time to move past the old Third Ward Caffe.

The name "Third Ward Cafe" does not do justice to this wonderful restaurant in Milwaukee's Third Ward. The name also does not give a clue that they serve wonderful Italian food, unless of course, you happen to know of the Third Ward's Italian heritage. The restaurant is warm and inviting, the food is excellent and the service great. They have a very nice selection of Italian wines and we selected a 2006 Castelio Banfi di Montalcino. This was one of the wines that they offer in a half bottle, something I wish more restaurants would do. A two course dinner (no desert) for my wife and I came to just a little over $60.00 without tax and tip. The wine added $55.00 to the bill, but was worth every penny.

This is a great place to enjoy a well-prepared meal after a downtown matinee or before an evening show. The service is friendly and efficient, and will give special attention to those who mention they want to be finished to be at the theatre or concert on time. Interesting pastas and specials made with in-season vegetables are highlights. I have visited several times and always had good luck finding on street parking within one block. The location is near a freeway exit and major streets that lead to many of Milwaukee's downtown attractions, and so is easy to find.
