After being on the road for three weeks, mostly spent on a bicycle, I needed a relaxing place to spend my week in Milwaukee. I was looking for a place with good reviews, a pool and whirlpool if possible, and, at the time, airport transportation. This hotell exceeded my expectations in all ways.
I arrived on a Friday afternoon after biking from the Missouri River, some 750 miles west. I'd ridden in the 2016 RAGBRAI and then continued across Illinois and Wisconsin to participate in a high school reunion. When I arrived I was tired, sweaty, and ready for some TLC. While this can be considered a 'budget' hotel, they didn't scrimp on the TLC.
I was very lucky to be greeted on my arrival by the shift manager Chelsea L. who is a friendly, funny, and very competent employee. She checked me in efficiently, gave a great room on the first floor with my bike, and shortly thereafter happily went out of her way to take me to the airport to pick up my car. Oddly airport rentals at Enterprise were cheaper than off-airport locations, not the usual situation. This meant I didn't need the airport shuttle at the end of my stay, but I was did to get my car.
My room was very clean and I didn't find any odds and ends behind desks or under chairs and such. There was a microwave and a good fridge in the room. I was able to adjust the temperature to my liking (warmer than it was set to when i arrived - but after riding all day to get there that was fine at first). There were ample towels (and good ones) in the bathroom and shower was my first order of business, then a nap.
After that I was taken the airport by Chelsea after her shifted ended (she's dedicated) and picked up my car. You do need to register your vehicle at the front desk but parking is free and plentiful.
I had a guest staying with me in our double queen room and she would arrive later that evening. I had no trouble getting extra card keys and extra supplies.
We both ate breakfast in the dining area (only open for breakfast) and it was the up to the standards I've come to expect from the Choice Hotels chain. Eggs, sausage, waffles, fruit, yogurt, juice, coffee and more are put out from 6-9 AM (weekdays) and 7-10 AM (weekends), I might be a bit off on the time, but it is available everyday and well presented and prepared. I didn't ever feel like there might be hygiene issues - everything was kept clean and fresh.
I should note that besides Chelsea the entire staff was accommodating and friendly, from the cleaning staff and handyman to the other desk staff, I was always treated with respect and a smile.
The pool and whirlpool were clean and well kept. I didn't use the fitness room as I was doing so much cycling, but it did feature both some new looking training equipment (walking, cycling, etc) as well as some free weights.
The laundry room was small, one washer and drying, but they seemed new and were very clean. I had no trouble at all with my laundry and it was less expensive than other places I've stayed; $1 per machine as well as for soap or drier sheets. The washer cycle was about 30 minutes (?) and the dryer 45.
As this is an airport location you'll probably have a car as I did, it's not exactly close to downtown Milwaukee, but access to the highway system is quite easy and nothing was really more than a few minutes away. Though I've been away from Milwaukee for quite a few years I had no trouble.
I can also note that Milwaukee is very bike friendly and getting around by bicycle is pretty easy as well. I had no trouble with anyone in Milwaukee and everyone seemed to treat cyclists with respect, giving way and being sure to pass at a distance. Right on Milwaukee.
For other dining options within walking distance you'll find a Wendys (didn't go there), and Oakland Gyros (excellent and recommended fast Greek place - also on Oakland Ave in the city), a Starbucks, and a few other places. I had no trouble getting something if I wanted it. There are also some grocery stores within a few minutes drive without resorting to the highway system. I liked the Outpost Co-op as it had the sorts of things I wanted.
I stayed a total of 8 nights and never regretted my decision. I was greeted warmly every time I came and went and made to feel I was more than someone just passing through. I'd definitely stay here again and while all the staff was great, my hats off to Chelsea for taking great care of my stay.
Mahalo for everything, I'd stay again!
