it may be slow, but it will save you miles while you take a break from driving around the river. sometimes the wait to cross can be annoying, but you can always get out and stretch a bit and get an ice cream until it's your turn to board.

How can there be anything bad about a ferry that is free? It can hold only 15 cars or in one of our cases a few cars and 40 motorcycles! heh. My kids are 14-21. They loved it so much we went back several days later and rode it one way, u-turned, and was the last one to fill it up going back. I love boats, trains, etc. so OK, there was one bad thing. IT WAS TOO SHORT! Even the kids wanted me to U-turn again but I decided we were going on up to the Dells.

If you want to get there in interstate time, DO NOT TAKE THIS FERRY OR ANY OTHER.

CAUTION. This is free and a tourist attraction not far from the Wisconsin Dells. You might have to wait a whopping 10 mins for it's return! OMG! TOO LONG! NOT!

This is just so cool; a diesel engine pulls a cable up nearly thru the center of the boat to pull it across. 2 outside cables keep it in line pretty much. It pulls the cable from the bottom of the water so it's not always completely straight but will be when it docks. Funny that it has a motor boat attached to it that might hold 12 people at best. Not going to hold 15 cars of people but there are life jackets. I doubt they've ever had to get them out though.

If you are not watching, you might get just a little seasick. It's so short though it won't last. It's big enough you can't feel waves at all. It starts and stops so slowly you won't know its moving unless you look. That's why you could get a little seasick, like me. BUT I LOVED IT!

Those of us who live here take the ferry for granted and use it more as a way to get across the lake rather than to enjoy the view...it is a great 7 minute ride!

A free!! ferry across the Wisconsin River. The ride sets the mood for a relaxing day at Devils Lake State Park or visiting one of the many other sights in the area.
