Over the years our family has enjoyed dining at Mama Mias various locations (West Allis, Brookfield, Burleigh and Port Washington) around Milwaukee.
I had read the Tripadvisor Oct. 2012 review that this NEW location (same owners and closer to our home, yippee) needed time to perhaps stabilize the staff, cooks, etc. to reach the qualiy of the old Mama Mias restaurant. We had always been happy with the CONSISTENT quality of the pizza, antipasto salad, appetizers, and garlicly, salty bread.
We knew what to expect to the point that we all had the SAME order of each when we visited.
My wife and I decided to put off going until last week, to give it time to work out being new.
We arrived at 5pm on a Friday night. We knew it would likely get busy a bit later which it did.
Whe we arrived the restaurant was approximately 1/4 to 1/2 filled. We easily parked in front and were immediately seated. There are NO booths, only open tables around a centrally located U shaped bar. There is a long segmented, shared, cushioned bench with a table and chair for couples. The bench allows perhaps a space of 4-5 ft between diners more fit for a quick lunchtime Milwaukee venue.
Our waitress was pleasant gave us our menus and recommended the Friday Fish Fry. She then returned, took our order, promptly brought our salads and beverages.
Wanting to test our regular order,we had antipasto salads, a small pizza and a Spinach Lasagna dinner. Our meals came with a 2 piece Garlic Bread. We each had a soda.
You can see the Port Washington menu with prices on the web. I could not locate the Mequon's website.
This is my food review............
The salads were boringly bland, and dry (??) perhaps because we are used to the large bowl antipasto?
The pizza was ok, not great.
Garlic bread was good.
The spinach lasagna was poor. It was not layered but was a big cheese/noodle blob with Spinach VERY sparsely intermingled as if they did not have enough of it on hand. IT was served HOT, thank you!
Our waitress NEVER returned to ask us if we wished another beverage - that's inexcusably poor.
Pricing seems higher, but then it's Mequon.
Strip Mall ambiance, but some nice Old Masters prints on the walls. Music was an ok mix and not too loud. Televisions are quite visible if that's necessary for you, not me.
So we finished, requested the leftovers and left before 6pm, not wanting to needlessly occupy a needed table on a busy night. The restaurant was then full, with people waiting at the entrance.
The U shaped bar allows for exiting at another door to a common entrance door rather than going through the group of waiting diners. The parking lot WAS PACKED. A 4wheel drive truck had parked on the grass making ruts due to the lacking stalls. I could barely fit into my car. The stalls are woefully narrow, so leave your wide SUV, or good car at home or face a potential dent.
I would recommend giving it more time until then I'll continue to drive to the Port Washington location better food, service, easier parking, etc.
Thanks, see you in Spring.....maybe.
