Took my children here on our way to Door County last year, don't know why I spaced out not talking about this marvelous attraction sooner. Even if your kids are not into ships and history, [mine weren't], there are sooo many intriguing and well put together displays here, no one will complain. The newly remodeled museum out-does the old in every way imaginable. Seeing the real-life torpedo display,,,,awesome! Going on a tour inside an authentic WWII submarine, MIND BLOWING!
What a great and mind-altering experience for both myself and my kids to be able to have such intimate contact with a piece of our national history. My dad was a Navy boy in WWII, and his brother, [later killed in WWII], helped to build ships in Manitowoc, so this really brought things close to home for me.
Tour guide for the sub was fantastic, especially re-counting the story of the rescued Japanese POW held there and the relationship that developed between crew and their prisoner. Heart-warming, inspiring history. Much to the surprise of our guide, my daughter was able to read Japanese and confirm for the other tourists that the POW did indeed help his captors by intentionally mislabeling pieces of equipment in his native language, just in case the sub was ever captured.
A big tip though, I don't think this would be a good place for really young children, those aged 6 and over though would likely have a blast!
Moderately priced with a nice gift shop and beautiful grounds.
