Owner description: Welcome to a great place to learn, play and explore the rich maritime history of Wisconsin and the Great Lakes region. Located on the shores of Lake Michigan, the Wisconsin Maritime Museum offers visitors a unique place to spend hours learning about the sailors, shipbuilders and submariners who made that history, and to have some great family fun! Founded in 1970 as the Manitowoc Submarine Memorial Association, the Wisconsin Maritime Museum has grown into one of the largest maritime museums in the Midwest. In addition to commemorating the maritime heritage of the Manitowoc-Two Rivers area and the submarines built here during World War II, the Wisconsin Maritime Museum is now a leader in preserving the maritime history of Wisconsin and the Great Lakes region.

Took my children here on our way to Door County last year, don't know why I spaced out not talking about this marvelous attraction sooner. Even if your kids are not into ships and history, [mine weren't], there are sooo many intriguing and well put together displays here, no one will complain. The newly remodeled museum out-does the old in every way imaginable. Seeing the real-life torpedo display,,,,awesome! Going on a tour inside an authentic WWII submarine, MIND BLOWING!
What a great and mind-altering experience for both myself and my kids to be able to have such intimate contact with a piece of our national history. My dad was a Navy boy in WWII, and his brother, [later killed in WWII], helped to build ships in Manitowoc, so this really brought things close to home for me.
Tour guide for the sub was fantastic, especially re-counting the story of the rescued Japanese POW held there and the relationship that developed between crew and their prisoner. Heart-warming, inspiring history. Much to the surprise of our guide, my daughter was able to read Japanese and confirm for the other tourists that the POW did indeed help his captors by intentionally mislabeling pieces of equipment in his native language, just in case the sub was ever captured.
A big tip though, I don't think this would be a good place for really young children, those aged 6 and over though would likely have a blast!
Moderately priced with a nice gift shop and beautiful grounds.

This was a nice place to tour especially on a rainy day. Especially enjoyed the submarine tour, which was included in the admission.

A very nice place to visit especially if you are interested in ships and submarines. The museum is not so big that you get tired or bored. There are a number of ships to see and you can get an up close look at them. You can learn about maritime history as well as ship-building and a sailors life through interactive exhibits. While there do not for get to go outside and tour the WWII submarine " COBIA " This is an experience you will long remember. There is even a small port town--19th century-- that you can tour through. You can even go into the "lab. " and examine Great Lakes marine life. There is a small gift shop as well. All in all a "neat and cool " place to visit, oh and parking is free.

A very historical and unique visit! The tour guide was really informative and answered all of our questions. We enjoyed it so much that we're thinking of trying their overnight stay! A must see in WI!

Very cool to learn about Wisconsin's maritime history. Nicely constructed exhibits. You can even tour a real-life WWII submarine, the USS Cobia, which I highly recommend. The submarine is a National Historic Landmark.
