Great location and diligent maintenance make this a very good value at its price point. It's downtown, but quiet because it's nestled between the lake, a relatively low-traffic street and a Y. There's a great walking/jogging trail along the lakeshore right at the hotel's doorstep, and a nice long walk out a breakwater to a small lighthouse. The Maritime Museum's right next door, but you can view the exterior of the S.S. Cobia sub without entering. Beernsten's Confectionary, an iconic old-style candy and soda shop, is one block west along with other shops.
While the property is older, someone is clearly working hard at maintenance and upkeep. Furniture, paint, mattresses and bedding were newish and fresh. The restaurant, lobby, pool and common areas were nondescript but serviceable.
A personable, cheery clerk costumed as a fox in honor of Halloween efficiently checked us in and directed us to the nature center we planned to visit. By morning, she had been replaced by two glowering crones....and that was no costume. Another minor nit is that the elevator wasn't cleaned during our stay; we noticed that because the same candy wrappers littered the floor on both days of our visit.
All in all, this hotel was a pleasant surprise and we would definitely stay there again.
