Loved taking our grandson here several times. We enjoyed the train ride, the forest tour, the boat, the walking the old buildings and the history of it all.

“Fun for families with small children”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 2, 2011

This is a fun place to visit with children, from toddlers up to pre-teens. It is fun for the little ones and somewhat educational for the older ones. I saw many very small children who get to go for free.
You buy your tickets at the train station, and then get to visit all the cars attached to the steam train. You get to ride anywhere you want to ride. The older children like to ride in the upper parts of the caboose(s) but they would have to arrive early to clain these prize spots.
The train ride is about 15 minutes or so. You can look for the hobo camp and you can see some of the bogs around the area.
When you get to the lumber camp there is lots to do. There is the old train equipment to see and play with. There is the museum with the blacksmith. There is the store, a nature museum, a nature trail, and several old buildings from the camp days.
there is a barn with lots of baby animals to play with. Go earlier in the year and the baby animals would be much younger. The animals are very clean.
There is a forest tour included. You get on a tram and you look at and learn different things about the forest and area
There is a bog tour. There is a cost for it. We did it several years ago. I liked it but my husband didn't and would not let us go again.
We are people who like to spend the entire day at places. If you do forest and bog tour I would spend as much time there as possible.
After we got back to the train station the kids all got to blow the train whistle.
I saw someone take the train who used a wheel chair. The men who drove the train lifted that person onto the train.

“Fun for families”

We love train rides so we checked out the Lumberjack Train in Laona. The drive to get there takes you through a national forest and it's very pretty. The train is pulled by a steam engine and has passenger cars, an open air car and a caboose. It's a short ride, but takes you to the lumberjack camp where there is a very good museum of the logging industry, a petting zoo (great for the kids), a concession stand and a store. There's also a short river boat tour and a drive through the woods. This is a great activity for families with young children and we enjoyed it as adults too. There were plenty of staff members and all were very pleasant and helpful. It's a great family excursion.
