“A poor man's? version of the Wliderness Lodge”
Reviewed December 28, 2007

After staying at this hotel I remarked to my wife it was a poor man's version of the Disney's Wilderness Lodge with its rustic themes etc. to which she replied that it wasn't all that cheap ($400/night for 2 bedroom suite). Well, yeah I guess. Still we had 3 beds with the sofa sleeper and 2 full baths. The water park was fun for an evening. Also had a decent breakfast at a whispering canyon style eatery. The accomodations were comparable to what you get at a Hampton. The spa was expensive and first rate.

Just like the title says...a great place for families.

If you are on business or just a couple looking for a romantic getway this is probably not the place for you as things can get a little loud and crazy. The rest of the Grand Geneva Resort property is more suited for business and quiet. I travel weekly for business and differentiate destinations like this.

We booked a 1-Bedroom for the two nights before Thanksgiving.

The easiest way was direct to their website which offered Internet specials.

Check in was a breeze and the staff was very friendly and accomodating. Pulled out maps and let us choose any open room we wanted.

The 1-bed room rate includes wrist band passes for four to the indoor water park. What is really nice is that they did not skimp on the days for the waterpark. Meaning that we booked two nights....but were given passes for the day we checked-in, the next full day, and for the full day of our check-out as well.

The 1-Bed room while a bit narrow actually works very well. Complete with a full kitchen, dining table, large bathroom with whirlpool tub, fireplace in family area , and separate bedroom the four of us were able to "move in" quite comfortably.

A small complaint might be that the room did not seem to be cleaned deeply. There were some crumbs on the chairs, smudges on the counters, and sediment grime in the drains of the tubs and sinks. Was it grossly bad...not at all. But others might be a bit more sensitive to this than we are. I chalk it up to the sheer number of families being rotated through a place like this. Likewise...the walls and carpets seem a bit beat up...but again anybody with small children banging around would certainly understand this...especially where the little ones are soaking wet 90% of the day.

The waterpark itself is not the biggest in WI (The Dells have enormous parks). But we did not want to drive all the way up to the Dells. It was more than big enough for our needs and the attractions were a good mix for smaller and bigger children. We were very impressed with how clean the common areas in the park were. Plenty of lifeguards working (mostly teenagers but very attentive and took their duties seriously) and the staff always seemed to be on top of things to keep it clean and safe.

My only complain here is the staff seems to let irresponsible guests get away with a little too much. My take is that the parent is the first line of safety and the staff is there for emergencies. But some parents seem to think the staff are their own personal babysitters. So the lifeguards sometimes get busy chasing down parents who are chatting on their cell phones instead of watching their kids. To me this is a safety issue and parents who do not heed a warning should be asked to leave the park. But you know how things are these days...God forbid anybody "dare" speak up to such "parents"...

Dining on the property was also very good. The snack bar inside the water park actually had a great deal more than just unhealthy fried foods...good salads, sandwiches, milk, etc. The BBQ restaurant had good food....but it was a little pricey and did not have a lot of seating. Expect a wait during dinner time. But remember...this place is part of the entire Grand Geneva Resort...so other places to eat are only a trolley ride away.

One other fun part our kids liked...at 7pm they have an activity room with a 65" DLP TV where they show a different movie every night. All the little ones sprawl out on beanbags in front and eat popcorn we popped in the room. Little things like this you just remember when you are a kid.

  • Liked — Great space and activities for the whole family
  • Disliked — Sometimes rules not enforced for irresponsible parents

My husband, two children (ages 9 & 8) and I spent the night before Thanksgiving at Timber Ridge. It was perfect. We got a great deal by checking out the specials online first. For only $109, we got a family fireplace suite which included waterpark passes. Instead of doing the "family pizza and movie pkg." we choose the "hot date" for $109 (date meaning any night Sun. - Thurs.) and bought a large pizza for $16, so we got a great deal. At check-in, both of our children received 4 tokens to the gameroom and at check-out we received $50 off our next visit, good for the next 13 months! We enjoyed being allowed to eat and drink poolside. For $6.22 you can get an alcoholic beverage in a plastic bottle. Better yet, we brought our own ($6.27 for 6 beverages!) and carried them in. They also have a restaurant with booths that overlook the waterpark. The waterpark was great... 2 waterslides, ropeclimbing, basketball hoops and 2 hot tubs. One hot tub connected to the outdoor hot tub, so you could swim through to outside. (The kids loved that, especially when it started to snow!) We took a drive through the resort to see the fanstastic, animated Christmas lights, beautiful! We had a wonderful time!

  • Liked — That you could eat and drink along the poolside
  • Disliked — Our room smelled like smoke, although all rooms were non-smoking.

Stayed here with my husband & two children, and another family in the room next door. WONDERFUL!! The grounds are so scenic!!Beautiful room, great bathtub, two person whirlpool, a table that sits 6 and a breakfast bar that sits 5.. Plenty of room to hang out.. seperate sleeping area.. Don't expect a 4 star, but definately nice.. Comfy beds, although we had to request extra pillows, it comes with 3. We had 4 in our party.. The Grand Geneva next door with WONDERFUL eateries.. We did take out from the italian place at Grand Geneva, really good pizza, salads and mussels.. Bring food along as they have a full kitchen with all the extras including a blender.. The waterpark is good, small, but plenty to do for children.. Never felt as I had to have my "hawk eyes", as I could see almost everything.. GREAT gameroom!! Our issue, as there always in one, our heat in our room did not shut off. Ran our air ALL the time, and kept the windows open.. Give this place a try..!! You will not be disappointed!

We stayed here two nights for a wedding in the area. We chose this resort because of the waterpark attraction and figured that during our downtime, it would be fun. The waterpark was the only positive we had during our stay, although we noticed there were very few lifeguards in the pool area. Our 1 Bedroom condo was filthy. The walls were all beat up, there were toilet paper wads near the ceiling and two lamps didn't work. There were food spills on the walls and doors. We never did find the remote for the television in the living area. The units are very narrow and there's not a lot of room to relax. Our room key never worked on the outside door located nearest to our room, so we always had to use the front entrance. I complained about this twice to the front desk and they said they would have someone look into it. The halls in the resort are beat up and the carpeting is disgusting. The elevator is in horrible condition too. It looks like the place was probably nice at one point, but has become rundown. It appeared they were very understaffed not only in the pool, but in the Snack Bar as well. There was only one person working on a Friday night and a large line. The gift shop wasn't even open at 10:30 on Saturday morning and there were no posted hours, but on Sunday morning at 8:00 it was open, but there was no clerk on staff. We finally got a front desk person to ring us up. The restaurant doesn't open for breakfast until 8 am and if you have young kids, you're used to eating earlier. We didn't want to eat in our room, but ended up going into the town because the Grand Geneva's restaurants don't open until 8 am either. For dinner, you cannot even place a room service order until 5pm or go to a restaurant because that is when they open. It seems to me that if they want to cater to families with kids, they should reconsider their hours for dining. I would suggest getting a hotel in downtown Lake Geneva because then you would have better options all within walking distance.

  • Liked — Leaving on Sunday morning.
  • Disliked — The lack of cleanliness and staff response to problems.

Our stay was over the Columbus day holiday. All the staff were very courteous and helpful, even when the resort was super busy. We had a 1 bedroom room, very spacious and very, very clean. The king-size bed had an excellent quality mattress and was extremely comfortable. The bathroom was very large and had a huge 2 person jacuzzi tub. The kitchen was well equipped with a full size refridgerator, stove top, dishwasher, microwave, toaster and even a blender. Nice little breakfast counter and 6 seat dining room table. Nice view of the hills, trees and horse riders passing by. Small, covered balcony with chairs and side table. We did not use the fireplace. Couch was very comfortable - hide-a-bed was not at all comfortable and I wouldn't sleep on it personally - but I am very picky about mattresses.
The water park was big, clean and had areas for all ages. The lifeguards were very watchful. Our 4 year old had a blast. It was nice that we could take her down on the big slide with us, most waterparks we've been to won't let us as she's really tiny. The indoor section of the hottub was a bit stained on the bottom, but only in the indoor section and it wasn't really a big deal. The little kids area was perfect, and in the 4 foot pool area the floating log rounds and the pool basketball hoops were a big hit. Husband liked the "bullet" tube slide, pitch black inside with LED lighting every so often along the way.
Barbeque food was just ok. The food in the water park mini-restaurant was much better. Next time we go I'm going to bring more food for the kitchen.
The trolley ride tour of the grounds was nice and the grounds are scenic and well kept. If you go on the trolley ride, remember to bring a small tip for the driver. I didn't realize tips were accepted and didn't have any cash :( Most people gave 1 dollar or a few coins.
The arcade was very fun, for our little one and for the grown ups. We came up 30 tickets short for the prize daughter wanted, but the staff let her have it anyway.
Our 4 year old's official review is "It was a dream vacation"
We will go back again soon, the drive is easy and quick and the place is great for families. Perfect for a quick 1 or 2 night getaway. Expect to spend money, but not bleed money. You can bring your own food to greatly reduce on-site costs. We didn't do the haunted hayride ($12 per adult and $6 for children under 6) and daughter was not old enough to ride the horses, kids have to be at least 8 to ride the trails. Pony rides for younger children were advertised in brochure.
