Love the new location. I ordered the angry seafood because the waiter said it was the spiciest selection on the menu. It wasn't the least bit spicey.

I love, love, love Kate's food. It's priced a little higher than other fine restaurants in La Crosse, but I always felt it was worth the price. But consider this. My husband and I were out with friends. We had ordered 2 appetizers, 4 entrees, 2 bottles of wine, and 2 desserts. Needless to say, the check was substantial. We were halfway through our desserts and still had 3/4 of a bottle wine left when the server (great server--not his fault) told us he needed our table. Huh? If we had been nursing cups of coffee for an hour, that would be one thing. But we were not even finished with our meals. Rude. We were told we could "hang out" at the servers' station (um, no), and they "loaned" us a wine plug so that we could transport the open bottle of wine. If that's how you want to run your restaurant, Kate, then have 2 or 3 seatings, with set times for arrival and departure. Tacky. Very tacky.

Visited with wife's sister and her husband. The men had the surf and turf special. It was a unique combo of steak and lobster ravioli with shrimp. Both sides of the meal were prepared as ordered and were especially good. The women also had the special and were very good. Service was very good. Please note that the wine corkage fee is only $15 so bringing your own bottle is worth it. The wines on their list are okay but if you prefer a little better the corkage fee is reasonable.
The restaurant is small so reservations are a must. Space is tight and it is somewhat noisy, but worth the inconvenience.

Intimate setting near the university. Kate's is our favorite North American restaurant. We had crisp, knowledgeable service from Ethan. What I savored in my dreams long after was the wet-aged fillet with lobster ravioli and a hint of curry. Kate's is a gem of the mid-west.
