This place is great. It is high on the bluff and gives a great view of the area. It is clean and so easy to maneuver around. A must see if in LaCrosse.

Take Main Street east up the winding road. (No, you are not in Colorado!) Enjoy the views of the city of La Crosse, and the Mississippi river area. We were there around sunset; spectacular!

The remodeled Grandad bluff overlook is the best view of the Mississippi valley and bluffs, plus the city of La Crosse and La Crescent, MN opposite. It's the first place I visited the day we moved here and it's an even better visit now, with better parking and an expanded overlook area. A local doctor has several slide shows of his photos in this area, often from the 600' bluff tops; http://www.sevenriversphoto.com/

Grandad's Bluff is visible from almost all areas of La Crosse; it is the reward you get if you come straight off the Mississippi into Riverside Park, make one right turn onto Main Street, and head due east for just over 2 miles through the heart of the city. At the base of Grandad's to your right is the Bluffside Inn, a small bar that's a favorite among locals; its owner recently announced plans to expand. To your right is the city-owned Forest Hills Golf Course. As of this writing, I don't believe the course is open, due to lack of business - but the kids still slide and snowboard down the hill in the winter, just as they have for generations.

As you begin your ascent up the aptly named Bliss Road, keep an eye out for bicyclists as this is a popular bike route. Be sure to stay in your lane and watch your speed as you take those curves (going up AND coming back down!) even as you gawk at the gorgeous trees, plants, rock formations and assorted wood creatures you may happen upon. About halfway up you'll come upon yet another local favorite watering hole named The Alpine Inn, where you can grab a pretty tasty sandwich or pizza if you're hungry. But continue on to the summit, because that's where the true beauty lies. You'll park your vehicle and walk up towards the gorgeous new shelter, complete with 2 working fireplaces (but no picnic tables, last I knew; I think the idea is to discourage folks from hunkering down and taking over the place all day). On the other side of the shelter is where you'll see the entire city of La Crosse spread out before you; yes sir, that's Minnesota due west, and the edge of Iowa over there towards the southwest. There are coin-operated viewfinders to bring things into focus, and you can also hike down the gently sloping walkway to the newly-designed (and safer!) lookout. You cannot say you've "seen" La Crosse if you haven't looked at it from Grandad's Bluff, particularly inthe fall when the trees surrounding, below, and stretching farther than the eyes can see are ablaze in their autumn glory. But make no mistake - it's worth the trip any time of the year. You seldom forget views that take your breath away...
