We booked the room through an online service for $50. The room was tiny, as we're the beds and bathroom. The television was a dinosaur with snowy reception. The door frame looked as if someone had kicked it in. There was a large gap at the top and bottom if the door. The actual frame was broken and not very secure. The bathtub had mold growing all the way around. The furniture was pretty beat up and dirty. The overall room was dank and didn't smell clean. The single electrical outlet by the TV was retrofitted with a six plug adapter that would make any electrician shudder. I would not recommend walking barefoot anywhere in the motel or room unless you have a good anti fungal handy. Several of the guests ignored the "no smoking within 25 feet of the door" and we had to walk through a cloud of cigarette smoke every single time we entered or exited. Several of the disheveled and unkempt guests were casually drinking cans of beer in the lobby while watching TV. Maybe it was the only place they had good reception.
WE DID NOT STAY THE NIGHT. We opted to stay at a more cleanly and spacious hotel for our visit to LaCrosse.
When we returned the room keys only several hours after check in, the receptionists was friendly enough and offered to move us to a different room. Obviously that would not have made a difference. If the tub was that moldy and the room not safe would you actually sleep in the bed? It made my skin crawl just imagining the things living in the sheets.

They did have freshly baked cookies in the lobby. I really hope the person responsible for cleaning the rooms didn't bake them.

For your safety and well-being, I recommend NOT staying at the Howard Johnson's in LaCrosse.

We were disappointed to read your review. After all, if you scroll down the page, you will read many wonderful comments about our house keeping staff. However, we understand that each experience is unique to the guest.
It is saddening that we could not satisfy your needs. We are working on updates right now IE purchasing new TVs, getting new furniture for the rooms. As for the smoking-since 2009 ALL hotels in Wisconsin have been smoke free. Such is the cause that people huddle in the doorways for warmth. We do apologize that the smoke upset you. We have several entrances you may have found suited your needs better. If not, simply approach the desk staff and they will break up the smokers for you. We are glad that the desk staff discussed your discretion. We appreciate all comments. And strive to make our guests feel important with their opinions. Yes, they were the ones to make the cookies. We assure you everyone on our staff is to the highest caliber of sanitation.

My husband and I stayed here on Saturday night. Booked the room through Priceline, snagged it for $29 a night ($40 total when it was all said and done). The exterior of the hotel is kind of run down, old, sitting between a Pizza Hut and a UHaul company, the Black River is across the highway, so if you get a room on the Pizza Hut side towards the front of the hotel you can see the river and perhaps an eagle or two. We stayed in room 210, no elevator, but the the vending machines and ice were right below us, so that was convenient. The vending machines are overpriced. When we checked in the lady working the front desk was very friendly, I asked her if the room had 2 beds, she said no, I then asked if it was at least a queen or king, she said no. It turned out we were put in a room with a single "double" bed. Hmm....so we went up to the room, it was room 211, and to put it simply, the bed is TINY.....I wouldn't recommend it for a couple, it was small. So, my husband went down stairs and asked if we could have a room with a larger bed or at least 2 beds, she wasn't harsh or anything, but she certainly needed to be persuaded firmly. The rooms with 2 beds cost the same as a room with one bed, not quite sure what the problem would be with switching us, but she eventually let us move to room 210, we appreciated her being accommodating. The room is dated, but seemed clean. The tv was a tube tv and several of the channels were snowy and the tv "rolled: from time to time. There was no microwave or fridge in the room, I am sure I read in the description from the website that they did have both. The bathroom was small, enough room for one person to be in. The mattress was okay, you could feel the springs, that usually doesn't bother me. The hotel was quiet and didn't hear the other guests. If you are looking for a place to sleep for the night and you get a good rate it is fine.

Thank you so much for reviewing our property. We read your compliments with a smile. As for the discrepancies not so much-with 3rd party reservations it is always good to call the property and double check your reservation. It often happens that hotels will run out of stock, of a certain room type. When this occurs the 3rd party will just list the reservation as “Run of House.” This means whatever is available…is what you get. We try our hardest to make sure this NEVER happens. Sometimes the opportunity to rectify leaves us without an option. However, we are glad to read you still received two beds. As for the fridge and microwave-it does list on our website that our rooms contain them. Sometimes they break, when this happens we will take a working one and place it in the non-working one’s place. Just contact the desk next time and we will make sure you have one in your room. Soon we hope to have new, flat screen, televisions as well.

Thank you,

Guest Service
