How many theaters can you watch the movie while eating pizza and drinking beer? Old school theater in downtown La Crosse. Very fun. They show Packers games there also sometimes.

“Great place for a cheap night out”
Reviewed September 24, 2011

When I was in college, the "Riv" was a staple because it was cheap entertainment. They show movies that have been out for a bit, but that aren't on DVD yet. The admission is cheap, especially if you are a student. They serve pizza, beer, and other movie theater fare. It looks like an old time theater and is just a fun experience if you've never been.

“Love it! Well worth it, if you can wait a few months to watch the movie!”
Reviewed August 3, 2011

I absolutely love watching movies at the Riv!!! First of all, the prices are super affordable, less than $5 (you just have to wait about two months after a movie comes out to watch it), the food is inexpensive as well (the pizza's good!).
Also, the screen in the main theater is set in a stage that could have been used for Opera. (Well, it's not as fancy as opera theaters now, but it is beautiful for a discount theater.) The lights have a beautiful glow, too. The seats are old, so the leather's cracked in places, but they're still comfortable. The seats in the screening room recline a little bit, which makes it more comfortable.
I actually went with my roommate, and we got two tickets, two 7" pizzas, and drinks for $20!!!! It's so nice to be able to watch movies at an affordable price!!! I watch every movie I can here!

“Cheap Date Night in a Funky Atmosphere”
Reviewed December 22, 2008

I love this place. Movie tickets are a steal here, about four dollars - and the main theatre is an old stage theatre, so it's a fun and funky atmosphere. Food and drinks are affordable, unlike mainstream movie theatres.

I will say the screening room is a bit daggy and could use some spiffing up, but the character of this place far overrides any concerns about sticky floors or rickety tables. The novelty of being able to eat and have cocktails while watching a movie really puts this place near the top of my "things to do in La Crosse" list.

Stay away from the pizza - the crust tastes soapy, as if they cook on a pizza stone that they wash with soap. The red wine is frequently served chilled, so you may have to ask for the "room temperature" wine. Also, marinara with the cheese bread is served chilled. That said, its minor shortcomings add to the charm of this place!
