Stayed here for a second time (1st time in 1999) in Aug 2008 on a golf package. Cannot find a negative to say about this place apart from the fact that it was crowded and the bar turned off the "other" football game I was watching when U of Wisconsin took the field.

Rooms were well appointed, roomy quiet and comfortable.

Golf was fantastic as always and the service was impeccable. Reputation as a top 5 golf resort is deserved and earned.

Blackwolf Run was in fantastic shape as Whistling Straits. No problems booking replay rounds, though in late August we managed only to squeak ours in before sunset.

When someone says Kohler, you immediately think of great bathrooms. That was what we expected upon arriving at the American Club. Old word charm with exceptional bathrooms!

When we checked in we were asked if we wanted to UPGRADE to a deluxe room. Since it was explained that the difference was a larger bathroom, we said why not. Our deluxe room #274 was a huge disappointment. Having recently finished a new home search, had I seen this bathroom in a home we were looking for, my first comment would have been “We need to gut this bathroom”. As a marketer, Kohler missed the boat in using this room to wow its guests and show how amazing Choler products are. Maybe 30 years ago this was a nice room. Now it is dated! I have stayed in many other 5 star spa resorts and hotels like the Phoenician, The 4 Seasons and the Ritz and expected this property to at least be on par. The spa and golf courses were nice, nit the rooms are in dire need of renovating.

We also dined in their 4 star Wisconsin room for dinner on Saturday night. We made a reservation for 4 @ 7:30. We arrived at 7:30 and were brought to our table. The table was set for TWO! Our spouses needed to STAND while they brought over 2 chairs and table settings! Once being seated, we noticed that the table was wobbly and spoke to THREE people before someone finally acknowledged it and asked us if we wanted to switch tables which we did, again having to wait for them to set it up. The restaurant was NOT crowded, yet getting a refill on coffee or water was a chore. In addition, there was absolutely NO AMBIANCE in the room. Some nicely placed lights on dimmers would have done wonders to create a more intimate atmosphere. Because there was NO OPTION for an ala cart Sunday breakfast around 11:00 we had to eat the Buffet in the Wisconsin room. The food was delicious but given it was not crowded; they should have placed the one LARGE PARTY that was there, away from the traffic pattern of other guests trying to get to the buffet. Since they constantly were "milling around each others seats”: there was a constant blocking of the aisles.

Would I recommend this hotel to anyone else? NO WAY! It is out dated and needs to rethink its service and planning. For $300/ night I would have expected something better than a run down Marriott or Holiday Inn! My room at the COURTYARD MARRIOTT was much better than this room!

We stayed at The American Club in the Standard Room and it was very nice! And quite reasonable. We were traveling with our 18 month old and the staff were very welcoming to all of us. The service is excellent in the restaurants and the hotel. The Spa was also wonderful, but the Front Desk Staff at the Spa were not on par with the rest of the Kohler Experience. There was much confusion about where things were etc. The Spa Technicinas were excellent, it was the in between folks that were disappointing.

My wife and I have stayed at the American Club 4 or 5 times over the last 15 years for weekend getaways. We enjoy the American Club for it's friendly and gracious service; the unique atmosphere of the hotel, grounds and Kohler experience; the comfortable and spacious rooms and baths; the sport and spa facilities and the great (but not always expensive) restaurants.

We stayed in a deluxe room. The decor in these rooms is a bit strange but it does work. The decor is hard to describe. It's kinda hunting lodge/homey. The place was originally a men's dormitory for immigrant workers and I think they are trying to maintain the type of feel that these men might have loved. Some reviews here comment that the rooms need updating but I think that they are missing the point. The rooms are suppose to look a bit dated.

The bath was great as usual. It had a two person whirlpool with beautiful tile and fixtures. Lot's of fun just to soak with your mate!

Tea is served in the late afternoon in the library. It's a nice little touch. The library chairs were dirty and ratty looking this time though and they definitely need replacing. It seemed odd because the place is very clean.

We have eaten in all of the restaurants and have enjoyed the food and service. This time we ate at Cucina, an italian restaurant in the nearby shopping area. It was very good and pretty reasonably priced. The fried artichoke appetizer and the arugalla salad were very tasty.

I always go for a swim at the sports facility. They have two very nice pools and one is reserved adult lap swimming. My wife has had massages at the spa and has enjoyed that experience.

Small criticism: A five star hotel should not have dirty, ratty chairs in a lounge area, run out of cream at the morning coffee, not have an express check-out option and make you wait until 4 pm to get into your room.

This was still an excellent place to spend a romantic weekend or overnight.

Having read reviews on this site prior to our trip, we were expecting the food to be lacking but this was not the case. On our first night we dined at Blackwolf Run...terrific in all ways; the second night was at the 'dreaded' Horse and Plow...it was very good. Our room service breakfasts were beyond fault with fruit which was as fresh and varied as summer time and omelettes without compare and perfectly prepared eggs Benedict. I agree that the rooms are a bit dated but certainly are well-appointed. My only criticism would be the lack of privacy in the bathroom. The bed was unexpectedly comfortable and supportive with an expansive choice of pillows. The design center was illuminating and fun. The weather did not cooperate so no cross country skiing or snow shoeing. The hotel staff is warm, inviting and easily accessed. It would be fun to try the spa and sports center but we had to leave early but look forward to a return visit...or two or three. We also did not try the dog sledding...next winter trip. What a lovely spot to ward off the winter doldrums and an easy 2 1/2 hours from Chicago. I highly recommend it and wish we were golfers are the terrain and views are spectacular.

From the moment we arrived at the American Club we felt special. Every staff person we encountered was great. From check in when we were warmly greeted, given a room upgrade and the front desk person offered to park our car, to when we checked out and the bell person went to the kitchen and grabbed us a couple of sodas for the drive home. The staff seemed to truly care about our stay.

Prior to booking we debated about staying in the main hotel or the Carriage House, I’m so glad we picked the Carriage House. I’m sure the hotel is nice, however, the carriage house was very small and quaint, located above the Waters Spa. The rooms, from what I understand, are a bit more modern. We booked a deluxe room and because it was slow, were upgraded to a Heritage Suite. It was wonderful. A highlight of the room was a huge whirlpool tub and a separate shower with a waterfall and 10 body jets. Amazing. (we priced the shower at the Kohler design center -$20,000!) The room also had a fireplace, 2 TVs with DVD player and a huge, super comfy king bed.
The spa was small, but nice. We both enjoyed our treatments. We went mid-week, off peak, so it was quiet and relaxing at both the waterfall pool area and the rooftop deck.
They offer 3 free food services a day in the lobby lounge. You can’t make a meal from them, but the evening service and cocktails are a nice stop before dinner.
There are several nice restaurants to choose from in the area. A great deal was a Seafood Buffet offered in one of the hotel’s nicer restaurants, The Wisconsin Room. The food was abundant and delicious and the price was fantastic (only $32 pp) Not much to do in the town, but it was a very nice place for a quiet get-away. Two tips- Go when it's quiet - midweek. Try to get a package with breafast included - it's a big savings.

We have stayed at the Carriage House for several years so we could enjoy the Kohler Water Spa. Upon check in we were told we were upgraded due to our return guest status. Our room was not what we expected....we have had much nicer rooms in the past and paid less for them. After several hours we did receive a call from the front desk telling us they could move us to a different facility in hopes of a nicer room. Since this idea meant we wouldn't be able to go to the spa without going outside (it's cold in WI!) and we were all unpacked, we decided the room would be ok. The spa has gotten busier over the years. Even though they increased some of their common areas, they just doesn't seem to be enough space to accomodate everyone comfortably. The noise level at the spa has increased quite a bit, too, which is a disappointment to me as I have always enjoyed relaxing in peace and quiet. I was surprised to see quite a bit of mold in the shower I used at the spa. Seems as though the upkeep isn't what it used to be. Also, the same pail with water that had leaked from the ceiling was found in the hotel hallway the whole time we were there. IMO these should not be traits of a pricey award winning hotel. Our experience and those of others on TripAdvisor make me wonder if the hotel management is listening to their clients!
