“A wonderful retreat but......”
Reviewed September 4, 2012

We selected the American Club as our base for Labor Day weekend. We truly enjoyed the exceptional customer service, the quiet gardens for reading and a wonderful room. Unfortunately these positives were accompanied by a couple of significant negatives. As we returned to our room to dress for dinner we encountered an individual lying on a hallway floor. Concerned, we stopped to see if we could help. Turns out he was intoxicated and decided to take a nap while waiting for someone to bring a key that would work in his door.

That night we had reserved a terrace window at Blackwolf Run for dinner. On arrival we were seated at a table away from the windows. When we suggested that one of the two tables marked with a reserve sign might be ours, we were assured they were not. After we were seated and provided with menus an apologetic hostess returned and told us that one of the reserved tables was indeed ours. We ordered the cajun walleye and the salmon. Sadly the walleye had no flavor at all. When I questioned the lack of any cajun seasoning the waitress brought three small bowls of sauces to try and add a note of flavor......sweet & sour, ranch and a spicy cocktail sauce. You must be kidding. We cancelled the next night's reservation at the Immigrant fearing a similar experience.

We enjoyed the facility but expected it would deliver on all counts......not so.

Room Tip: This may seem like a strange comment but the six or so pillows on the bed were all so thick that the...

We came from a very light filled room at the Iroquois Hotel on Mackinaw Island to a dark garden view room at The American Club. I would rate the below average for ambiance and above average for the bathroom and service. A 5 diamond facility room should offer free bottled water as a gratuity each day.

We golfed Whistling Straits. It would be a very difficult walk for anyone with foot, hip, back or knee issues. The views are spectacular. This was a bucket list play as the price is very steep and requires another fee for a mandatory caddie and tip making it more pricey than playing Pebble Beach. This is a layout that is hard to describe and one you will likely never see anywhere else.

Eating breakfast at the Straits is a very nice and fair priced venue with a wonderful view.

Lunch and dinner at the BlackWolf restaurant is a very nice log cabin woodsy feel with a view of The Meadows and River dual green finishing hole 18. The food was a good value and choice as well.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with some sunlight.

We came in early and had early lunch at Black Wolf Run and they fixed us lunch during there
breakfast seating, food was very good. The stairs I would see would be a challenge for older folks or people with knee problems getting to the locker rooms before your round. We played the river course and was shocked with the condition of course per the price we are used to paying for
great golf and this was not it, we played well and that didn't give me a reason for bad review, but the greens were beat up and they have core aerated the tee boxes, but at almost 600.00 dollars for the 2 of us, I just didn't see it. Be prepared physically for the Whistling Straits and bring your
a game.
We stayed at the off property Sandhill Cabin what a beautiful cabin, and secluded. It was
great. There wasn't anything about the choice of staying here, 3 floors, well appointed, slipper tub, 2 walk-in showers with added rain shower. Sauna in poker house which is in a separate building. This place would sleep many more than 2 and would be great for group. Views off
porch are great.
Carraige House Spa was great, the Woodlake market is a must if you stay in cabin to stock up for stay.
Would do again in a minute, but would save money on golf and do spa more.

Room Tip: Secluded and the best stay here for the money.

This is the perfect place for women golfers who also like to pamper themselves with massages and body treatments! I recently did a long weekend with a couple of girfriends and we couldn't have enjoyed ourselves any more. We stayed at the Carriage House which was just perfect. The room was a good size and since it's in the same building as the spa, we trekked back and forth in our robes. After a morning on some of the most challenging courses in the country, an afternoon soaking in the roof-top whirlpool and a post-round massage are just the ticket. And by the way, there were plenty of men taking advantage of the spa too, so you guys shouldn't feel too intimidated!

We also had great food just about everywhere we ate. The Wisconsin Room in the American Club itself across the street from the Carriage House was amazing - definitely get the Walleye. We had lunch at both golf courses and dinner at Black Wolf Run - I highly recommend the Walleye sandwhich at lunch. Cucina at the Shops at Woodlake is also recommended - sit outside if you can. It's delightful. The complimentary breakfast at the Carriage House leaves a bit to be desired, but who cares - the cocktails and snacks in the afternoon more than make up for that!

The gardens at the American Club are beautiful - make sure you visit the Green House; it's an adorable coffee shop in the middle of the gardens where you can get coffee and espresso drinks as well as delicious ice cream.

This is a place well worth keeping on your list of places to go!

If high end elegance with a country club feel is your cup of tea this is definitely the place for you. Well appointed rooms with those fabulous over the top Kohler Bathrooms made this stay over the top. If you are a golfer the Whistling Straights is beautiful! Play the course that all the golfing greats have including Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, etc....Customer Service levels were wonderful. I can't wait to go back.

This was a very nice hotel, with amazing Kohler fixtures. We stayed in the Eddie Mathews room and enjoyed the unique touches with a baseball great. Make sure to stop at the Horse and Plow for a pint and stop in for afternoon tea.

I was actually dreading this trip so perhaps it was a case of low expectations but the while the rooms were very dark, they were beautifully appointed and the staff could not have been friendlier or more helpful. The breakfast buffet while pricey was very good.
