“Steak that tastes like liver”
Reviewed October 14, 2013

Drove 25 miles to Fireside based upon Trip Advisor ratings. We were the only table in the dining room (arrived about 6pm) until another couple came in as we were eating (and they were the only ones there when we finished). Waitress was very friendly. Food was not so good and expensive for the quality. Ordered a steak medium (expecting a warm pink center) and it was not a very thick cut, well done and dry (like the liver my Mom made me eat when I was a kid). After a few bites I couldn't eat any more (but I didn't complain or send it back). Fish my girlfriend got was so so according to her and vegetables were bland and overcooked. My recommendation is to skip this place and go to the Chippewa Inn or the Ranch if you want a good meal at a reasonable price.

Stopped in early 5pm on a Sat night & had the place to ourselves for a good hour, appetizer tower was a nice touch, walleye & duck entrees were delicious, wine selection great. Will def return when in the area again.

“Very good, but could be better”
Reviewed September 23, 2013

My wife and I discovered The Fireside a few years ago while cruising around on our motorcycle. We stopped in and chatted for a while with the (then) new owners. We learned that the owner-chef had trained at a culinary school in Chicago. Both husband and wife were most pleasant.

We went back on Saturday evening (Sept. 21, 2013) for our anniversary dinner. The first person we met was the woman (the co-owner) with whom we had talked a couple years ago. We recognized her and started to make some small talk, telling her that we remembered her from our previous visit. Instead of welcoming us and thanking us for our return, she cut us short and remarked that the hostess would be right with us. At that point, my wife and I felt a bit unappreciated.

The Fireside menu is a bit limited. And so is the wine selection, at least to the extent that certain wines are available by the glass. We have no complaints about the food, as it is the best we have found in the area. The dessert options, however, were disappointing. The service was quite acceptable and our waitress deserved the nice gratuity which we left for her.

The dining room decor needs some updating, but hopefully this will come with time.

We have no difficulty with rating a restaurant as 5-star, but such places are indeed rare. We would have rated The Fireside as 5-star had it not been for the very lukewarm greeting we received from Erica, the co-owner.

“Tastebud delight in the north woods!”
Reviewed September 15, 2013

We had dinner at the Fireside last night for the first time and wow, what a meal. The decor needs a little updating but you are more than rewarded with the quality and presentation of the food. Don't let the unassuming exterior or menu fool you. Your tastebuds will be overjoyed with the unique combination of flavors.

“Very impressive”
Reviewed September 9, 2013

We went for dinner based on the Trip Advisor reviews. We had a wonderful meal. The restaurant is out in the country on the side of a county road. The interior is somewhat dated with an early 1960's look. That may put off some people but, for us, it was comfortable and gave it the look of a place that has earned its reputation. The menu is varied and there were a number of specials. The roast duck, walleye and mussels were particularly good. Fireside has earned its fine reputation and we would definitely go back if we return to the area.
