Owner description: Now in its 61st year of operation, Wade House historic site is owned and operated by the Wisconsin Historical Society. Set upon 240 rolling acres near the northern reaches of the Kettle Moraine State Forest, the site celebrates the world of plank road stagecoach travel, horse-drawn transportation, and mid-19th-century settlement and town building. The new Wade House Visitor Center and Wesley W. Jung Carriage Museum offers a rich array of exhibits providing orientation to the site and its themes. The wonder of Wisconsin's largest collection of carriages and wagons awaits each visitor to the site in the new, state-of-the-art 20,000 square-foot carriage museum. A visit to the site's historic area includes a guided tour of the 27-room stagecoach hotel built in 1850 and active demonstrations by costumed staff in the Dockstader Blacksmith Shop and Herrling Sawmill, which features an up-and-down saw powered by the Mullet River. Visitors are transported to and from the historic area via horse-drawn wagon, or they may enjoy a scenic boardwalk and walking trail. The Visitor Center includes a Gift Store and the Butternut Cafe, which offers lunch to museum visitors or travelers from 11 am - 2 pm daily.

The uniforms and those who perform the reinactments are true to form, and its very interesting to experience the world as we don't know it. Bring the kids...

“Excellent !!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 25, 2012

Loved it!

I'm a local, from Menomonee Falls (near Milwaukee) but had never visited before. My wife's family farm is in Elkhart Lake, about 5 miles away and her last visit was when she was little. We are members of the Wisconsin Historical Society and Wade House is one of their properties.

You enter and leave through the gift shop, then move through the large grounds via horse drawn wagon. The sawmill is a re-construction of the original - very well done with a very informative living history re-enactor.

The blacksmith shop is next. Unfortunately we were visiting just before closing and the fires had been shut down. The re-creator was in deep discussion with someone and we needed to move on to the Wade House proper for the last tour of the day so we only had a chance to pop in and out.

Wade House (which was a roadside Hotel) was very well done with excellent re-creators and a large amount of information that was shared. There are several out-buildings that we very briefly visited due to the time.

Then there is the Carriage Museum, which was simply incredible and a little known treasure. This is a MUST SEE part of the trip. Now I know what a "One Horse Open Sleigh" actually looks like and it looks like it must has been a blast!

The giftshop stayed open late to accomodate us. If you are a WI Historical Society member you already know the books from their website. The gift shop has a good selection of moderately priced additional memorabilia.

We spent about 2 hours, which was not nearly enough, a well timed visit could easily occupy 3 hours and would always be a joy.

“Great Living History experience”

We visited the Wade House last week. Our tour of the actual house/hotel seemed to lack detail, but the guides at the blacksmith shop and sawmill were great. Don't miss the carriage museum!

“Not just another pioneer village.”

The staff is what set this one apart for us. They cared so much and wanted you to leave loving it as much as they did. Six stars if I could.
