The Heidel House Resort advertises as an upscale destination. The location on the shore of Green Lake and the historical outbuildings and story create a very pleasant atmosphere for the visitor. However, attention to detail normally experienced at an upscale resort is lacking.
PROS:
(1) Beautiful location - Opportunities to engage in water sports and activities, hiking, and biking are plentiful and easily accessed
(2) Courteous staff
(3) Comfortable beds
(4) Easy drive from Chicago, Milwaukee, and Madison
CONS:
(1) Dated room furnishings (worn carpet, several cracked bathroom tiles, scratched doors, shower head hardware loose and not attached to shower wall)
(2) Noisy - groups of visitors gathered in lodging hallway and engaged in loud and lengthy conversation in late afternoon and early morning. Visitors leaving resort bar at closing time? (2:45 a.m.) engaged in loud, lengthy (15 min.), profane conversation immediately under our room window.
(3) Assortment of buildings used for lodging appear to vary widely in quality judging from external appearance.
(4) Insufficient parking close to lodging (see other reviews).
(5) The resort is built into a hill that slopes to lake shore. If visitors are elderly or need assistance walking, they will find access to lodging difficult as most entrances/exits are not handicap accessible.
(6) Extremely dirty windows in room (we overlooked the HVAC mechanicals surrounded by months of tree and leaf debris which accumulated on the outside of our room windows.)

The small downtown area of Green Lake is quaint and walk-able. Unfortunately at least four or five businesses are vacant. So while dining at Subway is possible, shopping for collectibles is not. As another reviewer indicated, Heidel House is not of the same quality as the Osthoff Lake Resort in Elkhart Lake or an upscale lodging in Lake Geneva. It is a lovely, quiet location to visit that needs more attention to detail.More
