Really the only place to stay if you want to kayak the Mink River. We went out every day to watch the sun climb over Rowleys Bay as we paddled to the river. After a day of sightseeing by car, we went back out in the kayaks to finish out the day. It sure was handy to leave the kayak next to the dock for a quick get away.

The room was clean and the bed firm. The staff was friendly and the mini fridge was waiting in our room as promised. There was plenty of parking for our trailer. There are guided kayak tours available on site.

The baked goods are amazing.

If you are looking for a nice, family-run resort filled with happy guests... stay at Wagon Trail Resort.

My family and I have been coming back to the Wagon Trail for years now. Each and every year we celebrate New Year's with our cousins. During the winter, there are a limited amount of guests staying at the resort, so it leaves us free to do as we please both inside and outside of the lodge. Hiking the trails in the woods behind the lodge is good exercise, and there are talks of a zipline system in the works. Our home was nice and well-kept, and I would certainly recommend the resort to others.

Dark, damp, stinks like mildew. Not quaint , just a dump. I stayed here for the weekend while my friends rented and equally outdated dump of a house on the same property. The baked goods at the bakery were the only bright spot. We were so happy it was only two nights. The bed and sheets must have been 100 years old. It was like sleeping in an attic at your great grandmothers. One of the worst places I have ever stayed. There was a wasp nest in the sand box where my friends kids were playing. The metal playground was old and totally unsafe. The indoor pool was dark and smelled and seemed dirty. The staff seemed bored, angry and disintrerested. With so many great choices in Door County, do not stay here. I cannot say just how awful it was.

We have been going to the Wagon Trail Resort as a family for many years. We have stayed in both the lodge, cabins and finally the vacation homes. Reading the reviews, I would have to agree that the lodge and restaurant have aged and changed in the years that we have gone. This past summer I think it has improved considerably. What draws us back is the location and the vacation homes that we stay in. If you are looking for something that is brand new and modern and with all of the amenities, then you need to look elsewhere on the pennisula. The resort offers a get away from the busy world. It is out of the way of the tourist traffic and allows you to rest and relax. We are able to watch the sunset and ride bikes safely. The vacation homes that we have stayed in are clean and comfortable. The furniture is not Pottery Barn, but I wouldn't expect that in the northern parts of Wisconsin.

Thank you for your comments! We love to hear from our guests and their experience here at Wagon Trail Resort and Vacation Homes. As a family business since the early 70’s and into our 4th generation (just getting born!), we pride ourselves on making our guests feel very at home and comfortable. Tucked away Rowleys Bay on Lake Michigan in Northern Door County, with the only access to the Mink River Estuary and a view of Newport State Park, we really feel that we are one of the hidden treasures of Door County! As we gain a growing guest base we believe it is because our guests feel like they are “coming home”. Hope to see you again soon at Wagon Trail… Jewel Owner/Manager

Have stayed at Wagon Trail Resort for several years. Almost didn't go back after reading the negative reviews, but glad we did. The resort was clean and the food was great. The baked goods were excellent. While the resort is off of the beaten path, it is close to all the best shopping and sightseeing spots. Watching the sun go down from their dock is one of our favorite things to do in Door County. Sure it's not perfect, but it feels like home.

Thank you for your positive comments. As a family owned and operated resort since 1970, when we are expecting guests we feel like company is coming! Most of our guests are return guests and the next largest group is guests that are refered by their friends! That is the ultimate compliment

Hope to see you again soon!

We stayed at this resort during a tandem bike rally in May 08. This was the recommended host hotel for the rally. The staff were very accommodating--even let us check in early at no extra cost. Our room was clean but very dated and talking could be heard clearly through the walls. The bathroom was very small and the shower unimpressive. We had one of the lake-side rooms which looked over the parking lot out to the lake. Not much of a view. The breakfast buffet at the resort was quite spendy but the food variety was plentyful. Because this area is a tourist spot, the room cost was probably on the mark but I would normally not pay more than $80 per night for a room of this quality. Our discounted rally rate was $99 per night. I would not stay here again if traveling to this area.

We were disappointed with this resort.
When we booked the room, we were told we couldn't check in early (before 3pm) because the carpet had been cleaned. This was acceptable as we were not due in until after 9pm. When we arrived, the carpeting was still damp. The next morning it was still damp. We ran the air conditioning unit to help remove the excess moisture from the room, this apparently didn't help. It caused some moisture to condense out onto everything (bedding, clothes), so apparently it was either broken or not designed to extract moisture, or was just overwhelmed. There were no other rooms available at the time so we were stuck.

The first night we realized that the mattresses were not just firm, but nearly rock hard. Worst mattress I've ever slept on, turning all night. One person at the front desk confided that at least some people complain about it. All mattresses in all units are the same, we were told. The only thing they offered was to put a comforter under the mattress sheet. This helped, but only a bit, obviously. The next day we told them it wasn't going to work out for a third night. Both of our backs were messed up and we had no restful sleep. Normally I'm up before the rest of my family, but not after sleeping at this place. A different person was at the desk, along with the person we had spoken to the day before. This new person said there was no grounds for our complaint, and that our decision to check out early would void our discount, and that they would help us out by not charging us for our third night. The other person at the desk, who we spoke to after the first night, remained silent.

As others have commented, there are signs of minimal upkeep. The ice machine on our floor had pans underneath to catch the wafer, but were insufficient to the task - the carpeting was soaked continuously all around it. The kids playground sandbox had an underground wasp nest in it.

We cannot recommend this resort to others.
