“A Wooded Peaceful Paradise with a great view of Green Bay”
Reviewed May 29, 2004

I always stay at the Landmark Resort when visiting Door County. It is so peaceful. There is an inside pool in one building. If you are stqying in a building without the pool, the short walk to the pool is very scenic and woodsy. There are all sorts of walkways and beautiful flowers on the way. Very rustic with the view of Green Bay. When making reservations you can ask for the building with the pool but don't expect to get the pool building with special offers. You know how that goes. That happens everywhere. There is no place like the Landmark! Nothing can compare.

My family and two other families each booked a two room suite from Dec 31 to Jan 3rd with the understanding that the building in which we were located contained the pool as we have young children. Our decision was based on the price we were quoted based on our understanding as we had previously stayed at hotels in Door County during this time period.
Much to my dismay I was informed that our rooms would be in a building located accross the road from the main building where the pool is located. I advised the desk person that I specifically inquired prior to making my reservation as to whether the pool was located in the same building as our rooms as I was aware that not all the rooms were by the pool as my sister had stayed there in the past. Much to my chagrin she was no help nor was the apparent manager I talked to. She advised that she could put us in the building with the pool but it would cost $20/day more than what were quoted. I also had my friend who was enroute talk to her via cell phone and they were basically calling us all liars. With no apologies they eventually gave us the rooms that we originally requested for the quoted price. I did not appreciate the fact that while attempting to have my friend talk to her and being cut off that the manager walked into another room even though I told her I was calling my friend back to again talk to her. I this was rude and further added to our long distance charge which we should not have been incurring in the first place.

We think it's great that The Landmark Resort is non-smoking (inside).
By the way, smoking is allowed in the Landmark Lounge and as far as we know, outside also. They have the smokeless cigarret disposal containers outside of the buildings. It is still the best place to stay in Door County and a great place for family gatherings and Weddings.
Our family had a reunion there and we have two smokers left who simply walked outside for their cigarret.

Landmark was always the place we stayed when visiting Door County. My daughther who spent many summers there while growing up wanted to get married in Door County. We immediately thought it would be wonderful to have the wedding at the Landmark! When we started to check into the facilities we were disappointed to discover that the Landmark was now smoke free. While no one in our immediate family smokes (or even likes the idea), we are not going to invite friends and family (of which we know there are some smokers) to a facility where they don't have a smoking area (preferrably outside).

We appreciate the fact that smoking is not allowed inside the facility itself however, to Ban smoking altogether makes Landmark and inappropriate place for a large gathering of guests.

Overall, our stay at the Landmark Resort in Egg Harbor, WI was terrible! The check in process wsa entirely too lengthy and once we finally got to our room, we discovered our water heater was broken. We were told it would be fixed while we were at dinner but came back to the room to find out that we would have to be changing rooms. Our dinner at the Landmark Restaurant was particulary awful. Not only were we greeted in an unfriendly manner by the hostess, our server was just as unfriendly. To top it off, our food was nothing more than average and took well over 50 min. to prepare. While the property itself is beautiful, the staff is not friendly or helpful (we often had no responses as to what kinds of things there are to do in Door County from the staff) and what could be a convienent restaurant, was just not an enjoyable experience. From our other stays in Door County, we were extremely disapointed in our stay at the Landmark and would recommend to anyone traveling to Door County to please not stay at the Landmark! If anything, do not eat at the unfriendly restaurant!

Living in Door County has many advantages, the best one being that you get to live in Door County. This past weekend, friends invited us to spend the wekeend with them in Egg Harbor at the Landmark. Although it's starting to show it's age, it is still quite nice, with views and amenities that are hard to beat for the price. Several swimming pools, jacuzzis and saunas dot the property, as well as tennis and basketball courts. The rooms and suites are more than adequate, extremely quiet, and well designed.

Why then the article title? "It was the best of times, and the worst of times." Our weekend was going just great until we made the mistake of dining at the Landmark's restaurant. It started when we (a group of four) walked in for dinner. Immediately, I could see the beautiful view of the bay the mostly empty dining room enjoyed. The hostess greeted is, and told us there would be at least a 20 minute wait for a table, and that we should wait in the bar. Only when I mentioned the empty dining room and suggested we leave was there suddenly a table available for us-- they obviously had wanted us to buy several rounds of drinks.

The menu was about as creative and interesting as an income tax form. Door County dining prices can be high, but this place seemd like it was trying to set a record. Our server, a 19 year old college student whose experience serving began with the current tourist season, started the experience by scrambling the drink order. In retrospect, we should have left at that point-- every indication was the Lankmark restaurant is a clip joint preying on unsuspecting tourists. Places like this are harder to find these days, but they were making it obvious.

Our salads were an boringly ordinary bed of greens, with the dressings being obviously from a jar. (A crime in a $20+ a plate restaurant.) The rolls, possibly baked on-site, were overbaked and inedible.

When the entrees arrived, two of the four plates were wrong, and two were ice cold. The worst plate was a beef tenderloin that was ordered as well done, but served very rare, and had to go back four times before it was properly cooked. That person didn't begin their meal until after the rest of us had been finished nearly fifteen minutes. The next worst case? Pork that was bloody and uncooked at the center.

Throughout the experience, the service was indifferent and substandard. The hostess, who was busy playing with someone's baby and not minding her job, when approached by us, would do nothing except bring out the "chef" who claimed to also be the restaurant's manager. The "chef" boldly told us to our face that while the food was poorly prepared and the service substandard, he could care less. I shared with him the fact we live only 20 minutes away-- even offering him my business card as evidence. He was unswayed, and suggested we order more drinks from the bar.

They added an 18% gratuity onto the tab, which they refused to drop. The restaurant managed to ruin the weekend on the very first night. If you stay at the Landmark, eat *anywhere* else. The only thing they want at the end of the evening is your wallet-- not your satisfaction.
