For the area that Mona Lisa resides in, it is a perfect upscale restaurant. It's not to upscale that people from upper WI can't come in wearing John Deere sweatshirts (which my boyfriend did), but still upscale enough that items on the menu aren't your normal Friday night fish fry. The food was good, sesoned well and good for mass consumption. Though I was disappointed in one of my dishes, which the sauce seemed watered down, all in all it was fun and fresh.

Upscale, yet casual dining, on water street. Great place. Menu changes.

My husband and I moved to Eau Claire from the East coast, and my family is Italian. We love this place, as do my Italian parents.

What you have to understand is that the menu is actually a mix of things. There are American Italian basics (plain spaghetti, lasagne, pesto, etc); things that will appeal to the Wisconsin/Minnesota palate (i.e. - there's usually something walleye on the menu - not an ingredient in classic Italian cuisine); some things I would say are more modern American with a heavy Mediterranean influence; and then just some simple pastas and appetizers that are actually Italian (as in, you might find them in a small restaurant in Italy somewhere).

The menu changes, so it's hard to pinpoint certain items, but they usually have a great appetizer of roasted garlic and goat cheese to spread on bread. There is also usually a great red sauce with mussels over pasta that is tasty (though points off for having to de-shell the mussels - that is a pain in the butt and this is not Zuppa di Pesce). There's a chicken dish with an average balsalmic chicken, but the incredible bacon risotto underneath it and the veggies are worth the price of the meal. (Mona's - if you're reading - make the risotto a standalone dish please!) And the putanesca with sausage is good, but again, points off for throwing a couple of sausages on top of a bowl of pasta. It's not always easy to cut them up on the slippery surface.

There are many options there that aren't necessarily bad, but I would say are plainer than other selections. But the table bread and garlic butter are great, there's a solid olive appetizer to pick on, the wine list is solid and affordable, and the atmosphere is festive. (Though I wish they'd just stick to the same art from year to year - last year's was great; this year's, so-so and kinda creepy).

I would say this is a restaurant if you're looking for a convivial evening - good food and drink over a table where you can laugh out loud with friends and not get glared at.

OVERPRICED PASTA, come on... The atmosphere is the best aspect of the place.
