We came to Eagle River for the Vintage Snowmobile Derby, and stopped at the White Spruce Inn for supper on Friday night. The staff there is courteous and friendly. The building itself is an old log home that is charming, and decorated with homey type country decor, but for the very casual atmosphere and setting, menu prices were overall ridiculous. The average menu prices ran $20-$29 per dinner, which for this type of establishment was WAY out of line. (We actually wondered if they had raised their prices just for the derby.) They had only one reasonably priced menu selection, which was the $12.50 all you can eat fish fry. If you chose the baked fish, it was dry and pretty tasteless, but the beer batter fish was honestly very tasty. Their clam chowder was delicious.
Overall though, the food is not prepared nor presented in any elegant fashion, to be very honest, the following night we dined at the Friendship House Family restaurant, which is just down the road, and is sort of like a "Country Kitchen" kind of place, and had a) MUCH better food b) larger portions c) menu prices that were almost 1/3 the cost of that of the White Spruce Inn's d) friendly attentive service. I don't mind spending more at a nice restaurant, but White Spruce Inn in no way shape or form qualifies as an upper scale establishment.
