We had the pleasure of being guests on THE pirate ship more than once. Fortunately, the videos are securely tucked into the family vault. Did you happen to hear the college graduate/Pocohantas at the front of the bow, belting out "Just Around the River Bend" as we meandered thru the channel? Did you happen to see the formerly sensible housewife don the black eye patch, fake sword, bandana and talk pirate language for two hours? Did you see the high school kids rock out to preselected iPod pirate-themed music without being embarrassed? Then you might have an idea of our pirate ship memories. I might add that no alcohol was involved, but it is an option for some groups.
All the while, Captain Steve was just calmly manning the boat. I'm guessing he has seen this all before. Something about the ride transforms normal humans into Pirates, whether it is living out their Pirates of the Carribean fantasies, their Pocohantas movie memories, or their desire to see the Eagle River chain from a whole new perspective.
This boat ride is epic. My advice is to plan ahead if you are visiting up north during the peak busy season.
We did purchase tons of pirate garb at the local dollar store before arriving. Our kids set up their own iPod mix, which easily connected to the iPod jack on board. Great sound system, I might add.
We also brought our own food, drink and lots of cameras and go-pro equipment. Great way to see the channel in a relaxed manner. Saw several eagle nests.
Captain Steve also will share the history and geography of the area, if the kids finally turn their swashbuckling music down. The guys enjoyed sitting on the top desk with the Captain.
If you really want to impress the jealous shore-hugging visitors on the beach at the resorts, go at dusk when the lights on the boat show off the torn sails! Quite impressive.
Some of our group swam in the middle of the lake as the pirate ship anchored. Easy to get back on board. Life jackets are provided, but we already brought our own with us. Enough places to sit. Enough places to set your food, snacks down. Looking forward to our next visit on the Eagle Chain to experience this again. Ahoy!
