My friends and I went to the lighhouse in July. Even though it was extremely hot, it was worth the trip. You park a little bit down the road from the lighthouse, and then you walk down a gravel path to get to it. That's the worst part of the trip - the fishy smell was horrible in that area. But once you are off the gravel path and on the grounds, the smell is gone and you can enjoy the beauty of your surroundings. You can walk through the house on your own and there is historical info posted on all the walls. There is a very small gift shop, and you can go up to the top of the lighthouse for an additional $4 (it costs $6 to get in). We chose not to do that because the 97 stairs up are all enclosed and the day was humid and in the 90's. I can't speak for the view at the top of the lighthouse, but from the grounds the view was beautiful. There were lovely wildflowers growing, a beautiful stone wall encircling the grounds, and picnic tables and benches placed on the lawn if you wanted to stop for a rest or a snack. The people in the lighthouse were friendly and helpful. It was a great glimpse into the past.

Thanks so much for the wonderful review. We hope you can return on a cooler day and make the climb to the top of historic light tower. The view is spectacular. We appologize for the fish smell as you crossed the natural stone causeway. We encounter this briefly many summers...guess its nature's way of reminding us that the lighthouse is on a island surrounded by big water.

This is a must to see attraction to visit while in Door County. A lot of interesting history and it's well kept. Only negative comment is that children under 5yold and or under (I think it's 42" or 48") tall are not allowed into the tower. Sorry, I can not remember the exact height. Our 3.5 year old was pretty upset that she wasn't able to see the tower from the inside. Wife and I had to take turns to go to the top of the tower.

Ahoy! Thanks much for the review...great to hear you enjoyed your visit to the historic Cana Island Light Station. We hope you can return in the future when your child is a bit older and can take on the climb to the top of the light tower. We regret that we need to have the age and height restrictions (42"). While spectacular, the historic light tower (constructed in 1869) wasn't designed with small children in mind. The spiral staircase and historic rail spacing on the light tower's exterior gallery aren't kid friendly. The risk of injury of fall is just to great to allow our youngest visitors to make the climb. We hope your child was entertained by all the other interesting things on the island and its rocky beaches while you made your way to the top.

This is our children's (now teens) favorite spot in Door County. The grounds are beautiful and well maintained. The lighthouse and its history is fascinating. The rocky beach has amazing views, and on a calm day you can walk out into Lake Michigan, if you choose. The new parking lot definitely makes parking easier. So take the time to visit, and it is definitely worth the small entrance fee. (Cash does work best.)

I loved going up the tower, which gave a great view of the peninsula and Lake Michigan, from where I could see white pelicans flying below me and see the inside of the order 3 Frensel lens, which was amazing. Unfortunately, the staff was not nearly as engaged as the staff at the Eagle Point Lighthouse, which was incredibly educational.

Ahoy! Thank your for the great review. The climb to the top of the light tower is a truly unique experience and the views are indeed spectacular. Our staff is typically very willing and enthusiastic in sharing their knowledge of the history of the lighthouse with our visitors...sorry to hear you caught them at a weaker moment. We'll do better next time!
