Staying at the Greenbrier is rather like being on a cruise ship. Everything you could possibly want is on campus; the cheerful and attentive service is top drawer; there is food and hospitality around every corner; and the location in the WV mountains is spectacular, especially with the fall colors.
We were there for a conference, and the facilities were truly excellent. The meeting rooms are all with 20' ceilings, 20 ' windows and 20' doors, spectacular drapes; chandeliers galore, excellent lighting, sweeping bay windows, I could go on.
The buildings vary in age, but the resort itself has been around since the 1830s, and the feel of the place is very Stately Home. The rooms are average size but very well appointed. My only complaint was that the shower was weak and lacked pressure, but that's it, and this was so irrelevant anyway in the context.
Golfing is PGA standard, mountain biking or hiking up into the wooded hills to the north is very good with clear trails and good variety. Horseback riding is of the "at a walk, follow the guide" variety, so not interesting to me. The Spa is excellent with a variety of hot stone and deep Swedish treatments.
I much appreciated free internet and coffee offered everywhere in the morning; just a nice touch, and made us all feel special.
I am not a resort person, but this was a great experience which we all very much enjoyed and will do again.

Room tip: Some of the rooms are a LONG way away from the center of the hotel, restaurants, amenities... Ask about the proposed room, and have a map handy to review options.

Thank you so much for letting us know about your recent visit! As you mention, the buildings on property vary in age, but The Greenbrier resort itself enjoys a 235-year history beginning in 1778. The cottages built in the 1830s are the oldest buildings still standing, and the central section of the current hotel was completed in 1913. We look forward to welcoming you back to enjoy The Greenbrier's long history of hospitality!

While staying at the Greenbrier we decided to eat one night in Prime 44. What a great decision! The steak were mouthwatering and we could cut them with our forks. The smallest steak portion they served was around 20oz and I knew I could not eat that much steak and neither could my husband, our waitress suggested that we split one steak so did and it was just the right size. The mushrooms were great with the steak. If staying in the area it would be hard to beat this restaurant for their food or their service. Don't miss it.

Having stayed in many great hotels in Europe and the US I would say this one ranks among the best of the best. The hotel is old but has been beautifully restored back to its original beauty. The rooms are large with small but beautifully decorated bathrooms. The indoor pool is amazingly large and has life guards on duty. The outdoor pool has an amazing view of the mountains in the distance. The restaurants are wonderful with great service and great food very well prepared. There is a large shopping plaza inside the hotel with great shops that contain some great items and an amazing toy store. The tour of the "Bunker" is wonderful and full of interesting facts about why it was constructed under the hotel. Well worth taking the tour. The staff go out of their way to make your stay memorable and pleasant. Even though the hotel is a bit pricey it is worth every penny and we cannot wait to return for another visit.

We loved The GB from the time we drove in and saw the wonderful hotel and grounds... Great room and great spa/massage experience.... Any and all small items others mention in their reviews negatively are things we expect in an old, classic location. The owners and staff obviously have invested a fortune in keeping this great American treasure at a high level of hospitality and excellence... We enjoyed the food and friendliness... We both loved the valet and bell staff... Guys who are enjoying their job and having fun doing it! Thanks for a fun time

We are so glad to hear that you appreciate the effort that goes into maintaining "this great American treasure." The Greenbrier resort dates to 1778, and many of the buildings on property date to the early 1830s - before many amenities that the resort now offers were even invented. We look forward to your next visit!

Just returned from my 20+ visit to this wonderful hotel. Staying in Spring Row is always an incredible experience, and the amenities are wonderful wonderful. Thatt he heated pool was open in late September was a plus. We were there for the tennis tournament, and seeing(and spending some time with) Sampras, McEnroe, Lendl and Haas was incredible. The staff continues to define graceful hospitality and we cannot wait to return.

Room tip: Spring Row is really a magnificent place to stay
