“Amazing place, amazing holiday!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 15, 2009

Firstly we did not stay in the Wilson Lodge but in one of the cottages in the grounds (Bluet) which was absolutely fantastic! We went for Xmas and had just the best time ever. The cottage was huge with four bedrooms, two bathrooms, kitchen and a very large lounge/dining area. We had a lovely stone fireplace complete with log fire. We got our own real xmas tree. It was fab fab fab! We even had deer in the garden! I have never stayed anywhere like this before and for an authentic xmas holiday it was just perfect. I would however be happy to go any time of year. The facilities in the main hotel were excellent, with a lovely heated indoor pool and jacuzzi. The restaurants and bar were excellent and the staff were really friendly and helpful. The whole of Oglebay Resort was brilliant and there was more in Wheeling than I had expected. If you are going in December the festival of lights was great but beware of long traffic queues on peak dates. We travelled all the way from the UK to Oglebay, it was worth the long journey. It was excellent value for money too. This holiday will last in my memory until the day I die.

We visited Wilson Lodge December 26th to take the kids to see Oglebay's festival of lights. Although their site claimed no availability I made one call to the resort and voila, we were able to get a suite. The suite was in the new section of Wilson Lodge and was very nice with well made furniture, flat screen TV's, soft bedding, heated towels, gorgeous bathroom - you get the idea. Overall, very nice and not bad for the price which included the 'lights' and a big breakfast.

We visited the mansion, the greenhouse, the glass museum, the 2 restaurants at the lodge, the pool (warm like bathwater), the snack/gift shoppe, the little shop of ornaments enroute to the lights and most of all the lights. Call me a woman, but I like when there's a LOT of freshly made chocolate at every shop & Oglebay did not disappoint.

What I found puzzling however, is where were all the lights? We were already at the resort so when we started our drive through the 'lights' we would come up on some, then nothing. Oh look there's some more lights. Then nothing. Are we still on the right road? Yea, there's snoopy with the arm pointing ahead. Look there's some over there... then nothing. To be fair, I'm used to Hartwood Acres where the lights are all in one spot so my expectations may have been unrealistically high given how many miles Oglebay claims to have lit.

Just the same, the resort is absolutely adorable esp decorated for the holidays. We had all meals on site and the food was excellent. If I were to offer any advice, it would be to get to the breakfast buffet EARLY before the lines hit. This place must be known for their breakfast and for good reason - I can't think of anything they didn't serve. Everything was freshly made to order, hence the lines.

We had an excellent all around trip, I wouldn't hesitate to book Oglebay again.

Oglebay Resort is a quaint Lodge set amongst a beautiful setting in WV, just one hour from Pittsburgh. We stayed here in the new Lodge Addition which boasts 500 square foot rooms with fireplaces, and large oversized bathrooms with double vanities and separate walk in showers and bathtubs. The Lodge Addition also features the new West Spa which was wonderful. The accommodations and spa were on par with any 4 Diamond Hotel & Spa Experience. The only problem was the rest of the experience. The older part of Wilson Lodge looks like it was built in the 1960's. This is where the hotels two restaurants, lobby, pool and fitness center are housed. Firstly, the fitness center is a joke. The equipment is at least 15 years old and is located in the pool area which is overcrowded with families. They should have added a fitness center in the Spa area or somewhere else in the new building. We had terrible experiences in the restaurant. Service was poor, employee morale was weak. We had dinner one night in the Ihnlenheld Dining Room , which offers both Buffet and Menu Service. We chose the menu option which had entrees ranging from $20-$40. We started with salads but were told that we could not have any bread because the only patrons that get bread are those who chose the buffet. Secondly, when we received our entrees I had a hair in my sauce over my salmon, which was dried out. Thirdly, it took 30 minutes to get a glass of wine. When speaking to one of the assistant managers I was informed that they have had 4 different Food & Beverage Managers in the last year, which explains the poorly trained staff and bad morale. This experienced carried over to the following morning when we came down for the free breakfast buffet. We had to wait 1 hour for a table because they could not accommodate the 750 people that were coming for breakfast. For lunch and dinner our second night we tried the Glassworks Grill, which was the other restaurant in the hotel. The food here was ok, but again there was service issues such as waiting 20 minutes to get ketchup for a hamburger and ordering steamed vegetables only to have them come nicely prepared for my wife but soaked in butter for me. When I asked the manager she rolled her eyes at me, which again goes back to constant transitions in management and poor training. To combat this issue we ate at restaurants in Wheeling (15 minutes) at the Riverworks Brewery which was very good. Make sure you stay in the new Lodge Addition, the older rooms are small and exterior corridor.

To begin, we made reservations at Oglebay over a month and a half ahead and received confirmation to one of Oglebay's cabins to spend our Christmas getaway. The main purposed of this trip was to spend 3 days as a family, at a place where not only our family but also our four retired racing greyhounds would be welcome.

Check-in, although a lengthy process, went smoothly, until we drove up to our cabin and noticed the five cars already parked in our cabins driveway and the merry festivities going on in our assigned cabin. After crossing our fingers, we called the front desk and explained the situation. This is exactly where our vacation went downhill.

In two cars, we sat with four dogs for the next two hours waiting for a response from the Oglebay staff. The first story was that the current residents of the cabin were booked for 2009, but since the computers were down during their check in, no one caught the mistake and they were allowed to check in. Oglebay assured us that this family would be packing and leaving immediately. After waiting 30 minutes after this phone call, and noticing no movement in the cabin, we contacted Oglebay once more. They were still trying to figure out what was going on, but again, assured us that the cabin would be ours. Yet another half hour later, Oglebay contacted us and said that because the entire resort was booked (therefore not another place for the current cabin residents) they would offer us accommodations at their Chalet. Now, as great as this may seem, please remember that we had an entire car packed full of a Christmas dinner and other meals to prepare in our cabins kitchen. The Chalet's do not have kitchens -- not even a microwave. Also remember that we wanted this to be a special visit for the dogs as well. The chalets are surrounded by parking lots and on steep hills -- not exactly an ideal doggie bathroom, especially for retired dogs (with medical conditions).

After consulting with the front desk manager, and general manger of the resort, we learned that if we did not accept the Chalet as our accommodation, they would have nowhere else to put us and therefore we would have to drive home. Although sympathetic, the staff did not attempt to understand our conditions and would not accept that the Chalet was not ideal for us. When asking about the family currently in OUR cabin, we were told that they would not be moved from the cabin because they were challenged with a handicapped individual. This individual could not do steps (even though the Chalet had NO steps) nor could be left alone. Therefore, the group who had the 2009 reservations took over our COMPLETE reservations for 2008 and Oglebay was not willing to change a thing about it. The general manager then assured us that the other party's reservation was actually for 2008, but would not show us any documentation of this story. He claimed that the cabin was doublebooked... with NO explanation of how this happened or why it was not fixed beforehand.

So, with assurance of free meals brought to us by room service for the entire stay, we decided to stay and make do with what we were offered. It only got worse after this decision. Everytime we called for food, we were told that we could not have it delivered to the Chalet. Furthermore, we then had to tell almost every single employee about our situation and explain to them that the General Manager promised us room service for all meals. Even more, after having to even go and pick up our food from the lodge, every order was missing something and/or not properly made. Please also remember, that we could not go out to eat because leaving the four dogs in the Chalet was not an option.
All in all, we had a terrible experience at Oglebay and they were not accommodating to us at all. Although we enjoyed the quality time with our family and dogs, Oglebay did not take responsibility for their mistakes, made up multiple stories, and did not properly accommodate our family’s needs. Please also note that we have traveled with our dogs up and down the east coast, and have never experienced such heartless and irresponsible treatment towards our traveling needs.

We were very excited about this trip, put hours of planning into it, and it turned out to be one of the biggest disappointments ever. Merry Christmas Oglebay .. Merry Christmas!

While visiting relatives in Columbus Ohio during Thanksgiving a suggestion was made for a short getaway and Christmas atmosphere Ogelbay was recommended .When calling the reservations desk the clerk was amazingly friendly .I exclaimed I was from Florida and was concerned of weather as it was a 120 mile drive .The clerk reassured me and also indicated if weather was a problem they would credit my deposit .The traditional room was a great price including a Mountaineer buffet breakfast .
The room at the Wilson Lodge was good enough for the price but would have spent the xtra money for the room with the fireplace .The Holiday decorations were great .The atmosphere was suburb despite the scare of the firealarm going off 30 minutes after checking in we headed down the stairs (yes lugging our bags to come across an employee who was reopening the doors and said it was okay . From there we decided to get a quick sandwich for dinner at the grill as I elected to pay the trolley price to do the festival of lights tour as it was raining lightly and again wanted to see the lights my self instead of attempting to drive and look After waiting for 45 min for our food I waved to the dining room manager and asked if our food could be expedited as we had reservations for 6:30 for the trolley
We had ordered at 5;30 another 5 min and she said it was on the way .Our waiter had two other tables with dual parties of eight ahead of us .The staff was not friendly or apologetic but the steak sandwich was great real filet too bad we had to rush the lights were supurb I wish it were not raining as the windows steamed up The next daywe had a dusting of snow with continued snow fall the reservation clerk said it would be okay and said they take care of the roads .The mountaineer breakfast was great in a glass enclosed dining room with linens and individual stations with a better serving crew ..the view of the snow covered valley and hills great .the tour thru the mansion great the glass musuem zoo and greenhouse great .Our lunch at 2;30 a soup special but came cold asked for reheat still luke warm but fresh chicken wedding soup could have been good Decided to order pizza in our room after making a snowman and angel a few snowballs this fla boy was okay the pizza came hot and quick .The snow continued to fall as we went to the entertainment room .a guitar player and songs as it seemed more people had checked in great hot chocolate and cookies .A workout in the rec room and a dip in the pool sorry the pool was closed cloudy from heavy children use on the weekend
checking out quick and efficient the girl assured me the roads were good as she came to work at 6 am sure enough as we drove down three deer in the snow covered distance a beautiful sight the trip home uneventful I have already recommeded olgelbay to a friend from Pittsburg and what to look for a great adventure

Took a group of 8 golfers, taking advantage of great deal during the month of October. Both days of the trip were beautiful, save issues with early morning frost, resulting in 2 1/2 - 3 Hour delays in tee times. As our tee time was 10:30 on the first day, we were able to get the round in, actually beginning at around noon, due to several groups deciding to leave. On the second day, our 12:20 tee time ended up being a 3:00 start, and we weren't able to get the entire round in before dark.

Many people weren't happy about the delay. The response that we were all given was "We can't predict the weather". Rain checks were offered to those who were interested, but they would only be valid for the month of October, subjecting a recipient to the same problem at a later date. No cash refunds were permitted, citing course policy.

I asked the starter what time that tee times would begin tomorrow. Although we wouldn't be there, I was curious as to what steps that the course was taking to address the likelihood of frost tomorrow. He stated that tee times would begin at 8:00, and they didn't think it would frost, despite the fact that it was predicted to be in the low 30's. The manager stated that they couldn't possibly have open times from 8-10, because the weather may not be a problem and then they would have 2 hours of nobody playing. Here is my response and suggestions for ADEQUATE customer service. Sometimes it is better to not do business, than to do it poorly.

8:00 tee times in October are likely to be problematic. Anticipate that tee times scheduled for noon or later may result in an inability to complete the round and determine an appropriate plan to address this issue. At a minimum, you have all resort guests' rooms in your software. On the starter sheet, it states "LODGING" for those who are staying in the lodge. Make an effort to contact players who are going to be affected by this "unpredictable weather" and demonstrate that you do care about their business by affording YOUR CUSTOMERS the opportunity to make alternative plans for the day. Had we had this type of notice, we could have planned to play somewhere else for that day. We do always have the ability to contact the pro shop, but the customer would have to learn the hard way and experience a day of frustration to understand what their options are.

As a result of this experience, we will not be returning to Oglebay. We travel quite extensively throughout the area, enjoying opportunities to play different courses. Although the courses were very enjoyable to play, the feeling that we were not valued as customers will result in negative reviews to all of our friends.

I look forward to hearing the representative at the annual golf show in Columbus, who will try to tell us how great Oglebay is.

2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 25, 2008

We spent a night in the Wilson lodge recently scouting a location for a family reunion. The Oglebay grounds are beautiful, with rolling hills and deer everywhere. Check-in at the lodge was smooth. The room, in the older part of the lodge, was small and had a slightly shabby 1950's feel to it, but sported a flat-screen TV and was decently clean. The intense room freshener did not quite mask that this had been a smoking room for many years in the past. As a former smoker, it did not bother me a lot, but it might bother someone who had never smoked. After exploring the property for about 45 minutes, we returned to my sister's car in the parking lot right in front of the entrance to find her windshield with a golf-ball size depression and shattered glass. The property has offered no accommodation or resolution to date. This apparently has happened before, so one would think a sign or warning would be in order rather than being told to park there (as I was). Service for cocktails and dinner in the casual restaurant was painfully slow and inhospitable. I ordered a bowl of chicken noodle soup that, when it finally arrived, contained not a single noodle. The rest of our group deemed their food mediocre at best and were frustrated by their inability to obtain such simple things as a glass of water. As noted by others, rooms can be noisy. I apparently had the bad luck to draw a room next to a group of people partying into the wee hours. But a walk the next morning was very pleasant, and several of the non-restaurant staff were nice and helpful. I would hesitate to return here in season, as they do not seem able to handle being full. And I would suggest that you do not park on the golf-course side of the property.
