“Lodge at Christmas”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 8, 2013

My family has had a tradition to view the Festival of Lights at Wilson Lodge each year. We have not gone for the last couple of years so we were anxious to see them this year. All the lights have been changed to LED and have added a number of new one since we last were there. We stayed in a chalet on the property and it was perfect - snow on the ground, deer roaming the property and glowing fire in the fireplace in the room - what could be better. The breakfast in the dining room prepared by chef was the start of a perfect day. The shops was great at the lodge also. The Good Zoo with the laser show was also a high light.

My husband and I were looking for a different experience for our 13th anniversary and decided on a package offered by Oglebay which included a room, free breakfast and a pass to the incredible Christmas lights. We were not disappointed!!! We stayed at one of the chalets and the room was wonderful. There was a king-sized bed, couch with pull-out bed, fireplace with gas logs, kitchen area with sink and small refrigerator and very nice bathroom. The room was very clean. A special treat was the Keurig coffeemaker with k-cups. The buffet breakfast was extensive and had something for everyone's taste. There was a chef for made-to-order omelets, all kinds of meats, eggs, casseroles, fresh fruit, yogurt, cereal, waffles made fresh.....yum!!!! And of course, the light show was delightful.....we will definitely go back!!!

Room Tip: The chalet room that we stayed in was spacious with lots of floor space

My husband and I stayed the weekend and once again we were not disappointed. The lights were beautiful and the food was great. We spent one day at the resort (zoo, shops, mansion, glass museum) and another in down town Wheeling (shops, civil war museum, fish market and center market). Can't wait to go back next year.

Room Tip: We request an intermediate king with a fireplace. They are at the end of the hall and are very quie...

Accommodated a full house of guests nicely. Buffet dinner at the formal dining room for NYE was a little disappointing. Price was a little over $500 for two nights over NYE which was a bit pricey for venue......
Lights are always a special treat!
Deluxe room was more light a suite, which i was not aware of when booking. Did not need the extra space or bar that was in our room. Would've liked a room with an outdoor courtyard view instead of pulled blinds over looking parking lot.......

Room Tip: be sure the room levels are explained to you......

We were attending a concert in Wheeling WV and decided to stay the night after the concert at the nearby Wilson Lodge at Oglebay Resort. They had a "package" that included a night's lodging, car pass to view the Christmas Light Displays and 2 passes for the breakfast buffet. The room was comfortable, as were the beds. The room was a typical room, but they have a variety of accomodations including a room with a fireplace. There is also an indoor swimming pool and a spa...
The room was basic but clean..including the bathroom. There is a Keurig coffee maker in the room...good hotel room coffee for a change. The staff was very friendly.
We didn't eat dinner in the dining room, but the breakfast buffet was the best I had ever eaten...a carafe of orange juice on the table, the fresh fruit was wonderful.. the pastries were plentiful and delicious. There is a chef that made me a vegetable omelet on-site...what a treat! I would definitely return. By the way, the light show was great also.. This was a nice mid-winter, Christmas, one day getaway.

Room Tip: The resort is huge..if you have a difficult time walking..mention this when making reservations...we...

Took the family and Mother-In-Law to Oglebay Resort for the Winter Lights Festival and spent the night at the Wilson Lodge.

We toured the Oglebay mansion and the Glass museum, and did some shopping. After a wonderful buffet dinner we boarded a trolley for a drive through out the park to see the light display's. We lucked into a beautiful time of the year as they had just received 4-5 inches as snow the entire grounds were covered.

We then wandered around the lodge stopping in one of the common rooms to listen to a singer/guitarist sing and play while we enjoyed cookies and hot cocoa.

Finally retired to our spacious and very nicely appointed room. Spent a quiet and restful night, going down for an expansive breakfast buffet the next morning.

I was very impressed overall, and will defiantly plan to return. The lodge and hotel were very nice, the food and service in the restuarants was great, and everyone from 13 to 70 had an enjoyable visit.

Room Tip: We stayed in the newer wing on the back of the hotel and found it to be very nice and quiet. Had to...

We stayed two nights at the Wilson Lodge (room 608) at $189 per night which is a Festival of Lights package. With this package you get to see the lights for $9 instead of a recommended cost of $15 per car. Our non-fireplace two bed room was great. The room included a full size ironing board, iron, hair dryer and Keurig coffee/tea maker.

The first night we eat at the GrassWorks Grill restaurant which is attached to the lodge. The menu is similar to Applebees restaurant. The meals were good. The next morning we ate at the famous hot and cold Mountaineer Breakfast Buffet (included in the package). There is no reservation required for that full breakfast which includes a minimum of "eggs to order" to freshly made "Belgian waffles". The buffet is extensive and good.

We shopped at the inside store at the lodge (The Resort Shop) where there are numerous Oglebay and Christmas (and non-Christmas) items. Wine is also sold at the store along with "7-Eleven" types convenience items.

We had a 3:00 pm reservation to eat at the buffet dinner (Ihlenfeld Dining Room) which is a separate expense of about $29 per person. The buffet was set for Christmas that included the typical whole ham (carved per your request) and sliced turkey with all the trimmings. One server said there is an extra cost for hot tea but a different server said there is no extra cost. Ultimately I enjoyed hot tea without an extra cost.

Next we put our Festival of Lights rear mirror sticker on the mirror and followed the self-tour signs to the few streets that make up the Lights. We enjoyed the lights and snow which provided a very festive background.

PRO: Both buffets had good foor and drink.
CON: I believe we paid too much for lights that anyone in the world could see without cost. I was told to pay for hot tea but did not have to.

Room Tip: Be prepared to walk several sets of stairs from your room to the dining room, to the store and the l...
