“Great Value Getaway”
Reviewed December 31, 2012

We were attending a concert in Wheeling WV and decided to stay the night after the concert at the nearby Wilson Lodge at Oglebay Resort. They had a "package" that included a night's lodging, car pass to view the Christmas Light Displays and 2 passes for the breakfast buffet. The room was comfortable, as were the beds. The room was a typical room, but they have a variety of accomodations including a room with a fireplace. There is also an indoor swimming pool and a spa...
The room was basic but clean..including the bathroom. There is a Keurig coffee maker in the room...good hotel room coffee for a change. The staff was very friendly.
We didn't eat dinner in the dining room, but the breakfast buffet was the best I had ever eaten...a carafe of orange juice on the table, the fresh fruit was wonderful.. the pastries were plentiful and delicious. There is a chef that made me a vegetable omelet on-site...what a treat! I would definitely return. By the way, the light show was great also.. This was a nice mid-winter, Christmas, one day getaway.

Room Tip: The resort is huge..if you have a difficult time walking..mention this when making reservations...we...

Took the family and Mother-In-Law to Oglebay Resort for the Winter Lights Festival and spent the night at the Wilson Lodge.

We toured the Oglebay mansion and the Glass museum, and did some shopping. After a wonderful buffet dinner we boarded a trolley for a drive through out the park to see the light display's. We lucked into a beautiful time of the year as they had just received 4-5 inches as snow the entire grounds were covered.

We then wandered around the lodge stopping in one of the common rooms to listen to a singer/guitarist sing and play while we enjoyed cookies and hot cocoa.

Finally retired to our spacious and very nicely appointed room. Spent a quiet and restful night, going down for an expansive breakfast buffet the next morning.

I was very impressed overall, and will defiantly plan to return. The lodge and hotel were very nice, the food and service in the restuarants was great, and everyone from 13 to 70 had an enjoyable visit.

Room Tip: We stayed in the newer wing on the back of the hotel and found it to be very nice and quiet. Had to...

We stayed two nights at the Wilson Lodge (room 608) at $189 per night which is a Festival of Lights package. With this package you get to see the lights for $9 instead of a recommended cost of $15 per car. Our non-fireplace two bed room was great. The room included a full size ironing board, iron, hair dryer and Keurig coffee/tea maker.

The first night we eat at the GrassWorks Grill restaurant which is attached to the lodge. The menu is similar to Applebees restaurant. The meals were good. The next morning we ate at the famous hot and cold Mountaineer Breakfast Buffet (included in the package). There is no reservation required for that full breakfast which includes a minimum of "eggs to order" to freshly made "Belgian waffles". The buffet is extensive and good.

We shopped at the inside store at the lodge (The Resort Shop) where there are numerous Oglebay and Christmas (and non-Christmas) items. Wine is also sold at the store along with "7-Eleven" types convenience items.

We had a 3:00 pm reservation to eat at the buffet dinner (Ihlenfeld Dining Room) which is a separate expense of about $29 per person. The buffet was set for Christmas that included the typical whole ham (carved per your request) and sliced turkey with all the trimmings. One server said there is an extra cost for hot tea but a different server said there is no extra cost. Ultimately I enjoyed hot tea without an extra cost.

Next we put our Festival of Lights rear mirror sticker on the mirror and followed the self-tour signs to the few streets that make up the Lights. We enjoyed the lights and snow which provided a very festive background.

PRO: Both buffets had good foor and drink.
CON: I believe we paid too much for lights that anyone in the world could see without cost. I was told to pay for hot tea but did not have to.

Room Tip: Be prepared to walk several sets of stairs from your room to the dining room, to the store and the l...

We have gone to this buffet for a number of years. The fact that we continue to frequent it is a testament to the fact that it has good quality, is utilitarian, and delivers a highly acceptable service for the price.

Reservations are a must. The place becomes quite packed around both lunch and dinner times. We have found that the very best time is about 3:30 PM. The place is less crowded and, by the time we are done eating, it is dark enough to see the lights at Oglebay. I am convinced that the Christmas Light Display at Oglebay ranks with the very best in the country; hence, it is worth the trouble to see and making scheduling decisions to permit your including it.

Over the years, we have never had a dish that would be characterized as poor or bad. The rest of the dishes range from exceptionally good to rather ordinary. The best example of this is the salmon; when they serve smoked salmon, it is so very good that it is difficult to explain, but when they attempt to use a fresh salmon for that many people over that long a time----well, it remains good but becomes ordinary. (I just noted that the salmon has been a subject of other comments!)

The service, however, has never varied. The young people who constitute the wait staff are always kind, welcoming, attentive, and provide service of the highest quality. The fact is that, regardless of other comments, the value of this meal is truly extraordinary.

Went here to see the lights display and decided to have the buffet dinner at Wilson Lodge. It was terrible! The food was all cold and not good at all. The selection was terrible. The buffet was from 4 - 7 & our reservation was for 5:30 so nothing should have been picked over. The dessert area was all that looked appetizing but my cake was dry and stale. My family left the buffet really hungry. We actually considered stopping at Sheetz for food after dinner. That's sad!

On a positive note, the light display is terrific. Will go back for that and eat elsewhere.

Thank you for visiting during the Festival of Lights and we are genuinely sorry to hear of your experience while dining with us. We strive to provide a memorable experience for every guest and your experience is not a typical performance of the Festival of Lights Buffet at Wilson Lodge. With an average of 400 guests each evening during the Festival of Lights we focus on maintaining our high standards and apologize that we fell short. We hope you will visit us again to enjoy a true Oglebay dining experience!

First off I never write a review for anywhere bit I felt this is necessary. In town for Christmas went to the hotel for the Christmas buffet. Worst idea ever.food was very disappointing. Salmon was over poached and under seasoned. Prime rib was cooked correctly but how hard is that if u have an alto sham or combi oven, but it was very under seasoned. Cod was actually whiting fish, list goes on. Hard to expect great things from a buffet but wow so disappointed. Service was ok but staff seemed pissed to be there, not the servers but management seemed to have a chip on their shoulder. If you can't find the right people that want to be there and run this.place correctly, why even try. Used to love coming here as a child but can't see myself coming again. And seriously ur carving chefs were so dirty and disheveled looking, someone needs to set a serious standard there; otherwise this won't be the last poor review.

Thank you for your comments. We strive to provide legendary service and meals for each and every guest but it seems that we missed the mark for your experience. Our special culinary events, including Thanksgiving, Christmas, Mothers Day and Easter, are very popular with more than 1000 guests enjoying each high-quality event. Your comments will be discussed with the staff so we can avoid another breech in procedures. We apologize and hope you will give us another try!

I visited during the Festival of Lights and the decorations in the lodge were gorgeous! We stayed in a traditional room which was pretty average. It was one of the 200 level rooms on the second floor. The room could have used a little updated and it was a little small, but fine for a quick two night getaway. The vanity in the bathroom was updated, but not anything else. We ended up looking at the new rooms in the spa wing in case we decided to visit again. They were gorgeous! Brand new, but still with a "lodge" feel and including a stone fireplace! The staff was overall very friendly, helpful, and accommodating. The breakfast buffet each morning was fantastic and was included in the room package price. The dinner buffet wasn't nearly as good, but I would still rate it a 7 on a scale of 1-10. One big complaint I do have is about the lack of signage on the property. For example, on the sixth floor there is a sign pointing to the walkway to the spa. You take the walkway all the way to the end of the hall and there's no spa. There's no spa anywhere on the sixth floor. Not until you get on the elevator do you see a sign that lists each floor with the spa being located on floor 3. I ran into at least 4 different people wondering around also looking for the spa during my stay! There was no sign on sixth floor directing you to take the elevator, I just got on it and noticed the sign by chance. Lastly, I felt that Oglebay did a very poor job advertising all the activities they offer. The vast majority of what I learned about what they have to offer was by visiting their website prior to the trip. Once at the actual resort, this information wasn't readily available or the activities advertised.
