Food is mostly sandwiches and desserts. They do serve beer but the labels are not the normal brands. This place is probably pretty good when they have a good banjo group on weekends. That's what we were hoping for but we did not get it. It is worth a stop for a dessert just to see the old place. It's a trip into the past and an interesting old building. Most of the shops along the small strip in the town of Davis were closed. It is probably quite nice to visit when the season gets going a bit more.
We went on a week night for a one-man show that started at 8pm. Since we already had dinner, we only ordered their homemade ice cream. Ice cream was OK but nothing special. The one-man show was not very good. There were only nine customers and we made up half the audience. Felt sorry for the guy so we stayed so he wouldn't feel bad. One customer left after the first two songs. We kept waiting for him to take an intermission but then we decided he wasn't going to take one because everyone would leave. We finally put money in his tip jar in between songs and slipped out the door. It was painful.

We had several meals here recently. The food was just okay, but the funky atmosphere and great music made it memorable. They have great homemade lemonade and homemade ice cream as well. This is a good place to take the whole family for a fun outing.

Killer beer selection, great scratch-made food, and live music on the weekends. How could you go wrong?

Where else can you eat lunch on the weekends and have good music for just a donation? This is a gem!

This place is so different that it almost defies description. It is not a restaurant and IS NOT OPEN every day. However, when it is, it does have good soups, roll-ups, veggie and real meat sandwiches, ice cream (like chocolate jalapeno, and even a regular kind or two). The place is acceptable for families but might be considered a bar with the regular bottle stuff and a few local micro brews being served. It is a no smoking place but often as the crowd wanders out and back in, one can get a good variety of smoke smells. The key part is the music that goes on here most Friday, Saturdays, and Sundays. One really needs to look at the website (www.purplefiddle.com) to see what a variety of bands, groups, and individuals might be contracted to play here. There are even free shows that allow a new, budding performer to play to a live crowd. Sometimes the crowd might be ten people or it might a totally packed, no breathing room mob. Expect to go two hours early if one of these hot groups are playing if you even want to think about getting a chair or a bench seat. Go here if for no other reason than to see this old West Virginia store front area and to experience the totally colorful crowd that wanders through this wonderful little place.
