“Thanksgiving delight in W. Virginia with European trimmings”

I decided to treat my husband to a couple of days away over Thanksgiving. I had been ill during the summer and he took great care of me. I chose the Bavarian Inn because of its European emphasis and we were both very pleased with the choice. We stayed in one of the "Chalets" with a lovely view over the Potomac and a really spacious room to relax in.
We had a small problem with a leaky sink and it was taken care of as soon as I reported it. We ate in the Rathskellar and the main dining room, which were two different experiences with delicious meals and excellent wines. The staff were very personable and always helpful.
We are considering making this a Thanksgiving tradition.

My Wife and I have just celebrated our First Wedding Anniversary at the wonderful Bavarian Inn. We were married last year and went to West Virginia on our Honeymoon. We asked in both Berkeley Springs and Martinsburg where we could go for a great dinner. It was unanimous, we had to go to Shepherdstown and and enjoy the Bavarian Inn! No regrets the food and service at the Rathskeller was extrodinary! My Bride and I enjoyed both a wonderful German meal and amazing American fare as well. Our waiter, who we wish we could remember his name (he deserved a standing ovation!), that evening made us feel most welcome and special, but most of all recommended a great bottle of wine for us to enjoy
We were both so taken by the whole evening that we promised to come back another time. As the year goes by and we crept up on our one Year Anniversary it was obvious that I wanted to return. My wife was so excited that we would be both dining and staying at the Inn as well.
It was a wonderful stay. The food was amazing, the wine was incredible. Our room was very nice and the service and people, our waitress Darla, at the restaurant were first rate.
Its been decided that we will be back every year in November if not more often.

We first visited this wonderful place after recommendations for our honeymoon in 1997. Since then we have been almost every year to celebrate our anniversary. We have varied our trips so that we could experience all 4 seasons. Every time we have been there the service is exceptional in the restaurant and with the housekeeping staff. The food is absolutely the best German food we have been able to find but they also have non-German options. The servers are dedicated to making your experience extremely memorable. If we had to choose one word to describe the Bavarian Inn it would be relaxing. Every time we are there we feel an overwhelming peace that makes us think of "Almost heaven, West Virginia."

Staying and eating at the Bavarian Inn is a wonderful experience. Our room had a private balcony overlooking the Potomac River, an elegant fireplace (that lit or extinguished with the flip of a swtich) and was beautifully decorated in soft European luxury. The menu items included Rockfish, veggie lasagna, traditional German dishes, and wild game selections. The beer and wine lists were impressive. We stopped by the pub for a martini but would gladly go back and dine there another time as the atmosphere was very pleasant and cozy. Dinner prices and our room rates were reasonable for what we received and its quality. Breakfast was a little pricy but still very tasty. Shepherdstown, WV is a delightful place to stroll with many historic building and the surrounding area is full of historical, recreational, hiking, photographing, shopping experiences waiting to be had. We can't wait to go back again.

We enjoyed a spring stay at this truly charming inn. We were delighted with the service, especially Evie, the elegance of our room with fireplace, and the breathtaking view from our balcony. We were so impressed with the Sunday brunch that we purchased gift certificates for mother's day and father's day. My family also truly enjoyed their experience in your gourmet restaurant. You helped me give the perfect gift this year! I am looking forward to my next stay, hopefully in December! Sincerely, Leslie and John

Dear Valued Guest,
Thank you very much for your kind words about your recent stay with us. I will also make certain that the employees you noted will get special recognition. Our Sunday brunch has been very popular since it's beginning over 3 years ago. We offer it every Sunday except on holidays where we feature an a la carte menu. We look forward to your return to our Inn.

This is my third visit to this hotel. In the past, we considered it retro but nice enough. This visit was very disappointing. The rooms are in great need of updating and seem to all smell of mold. There was a leak in the ceiling in our room, but the other room we were offered smelled even more musty than the leaky one. The internet connection was poor. The sofa bed was TERRIBLE. The $250/night rate would suggest that there would be amenities, but there is no DVD or pay per view, the pool was closed for the season (though it was 95 degrees during the day, the air conditioning was poor, there was mold on the lampshades, and food on the curtains. Yuck.

Dear Valued Guest,
Thank you for taking the time to share your comments. I am very sorry to hear of your dissappointment. We take all comments very seriously and will immediately look into the areas you mentioned. I apologize the pool was closed. This is done as a usual practice right after Labor Day weekend. We've had a very unusually hot and dry September, which none of us were expecting, causing the unusual demand for the pool and also numerous humidity issues. We are continuously updating all of our rooms and public spaces, and I apologize you found yours less than satisfactory. Please feel free to contact me anytime, so we can ensure your visit is as good as or even better than the ones you and our other guests have previously enjoyed. We hope to welcome you back to our Inn in the near future.

Our stay was a birthday gift from my partner and she and I both agreed it was one of the best getaways we've had. The location, room, food and staff could not have been better. We plan to spend the New Year's weekend here and look forward to many future visits.
